They've had a few. It's been interesting to watch the modern online internet fringe culture's transition. Started as a sort of apolitical pure-libertarianism. Maybe slightly socially left but only because that was cooler/non-popular in the wake of the US pro-war hyper-patriotism following the uh planes of Sept 11th.

Now, a selectively libertarian and authoritarian doctrine coupled with hard right economic policy is more in the mainstream (epitomized by the US. Democrat Party). Orthodoxy is a must to keep your position in this group. You will be kicked out and shunned if you don't sign on. Gay marriage yes, drugs yes, abortion yes, using the word "retard" is not acceptable, guns no, immigrants: can't have enough, I'll let the other side talk when it doesn't trigger me, war is an unfortunate necessity and not the world's largest industry.

Meanwhile the online fringe, or the now "alt-right," seems to have shifted to another rigid collection of liberatarian and authoritarian ideals coupled with hard right economic policy. They also demand orthodoxy, to about the same degree. Go ahead -- say something disagreeable and look how fast you get banned. They'll let the other side talk when it doesn't trigger them. Otherwise, censorship is good! (Whereas in early and mid-2000s, censorship was considered absolutely nauseating, unthinkable, the worst regression possible. Times sure have changed.)

But though it's essentially reactionary in nature, you can't downplay its influence. It's a movement that's managed to capture the hearts and minds of many young men of a certain age who have bad prospects -- high employment masked with low numbers by underemployment and people "not currently in the workforce" (gave up and went back to live with mom/became homeless) -- and who would like a change. Keep in mind, many of these people are told regularly that it's not really OK to be who they are, to have been born as they are. As a white man, sure, I get that. I get annoyed at jokes that tell me I should be ashamed of who I am, and that nearly everyone else should be proud of who they are -- despite the fact that, like me, all they have done to earn the claim is to be thrown into a body. (Be proud of what you can make yourself into, not your thrownness.)

I can understand the allure of the alt-right, and why it's gained a lot of traction. It makes sense. I don't see how it's something that will just disappear in a few years. It's going to transform, of course. The patterns of thought will change. But some will stick. At the very least, that sense of group identity and affinity will probably remain.


One last interesting bit: I have on pretty good authority that Richard Spencer was a hard leftist in college. He was apparently quite the egotist. Rather than a specific ideology, he's probably more interested in the notion of power. Interested in power more than an identity, like pretty much anyone you might call a willing leader. Thoughts are malleable, memories are malleable, humans are very very malleable. The alt-right doesn't really need an identity. It needs the power to change a situation, the ability to put up the middle finger and say fuck you when every vote in the ballot box feels like it goes to the same incinerator. What identity you use to accomplish that is really more up to the situation than who you are.

The Alt Right consists of people in the KKK, gun freaks who join militias who fantasize of the day when there is a civil war and they get to use their murderous toys on Antifa and communist liberals (a made up fear as true communists are a very small percentage of people in usa), religious nut jobs who twisted God and Jesus into a philosophy of white and christian supremicism that supports war and violence at its core with deep seated desire to have authoritarian control over all who differ. They have strong desires to lock up political opponents and naturally embrace Nazism. A very large percentage of them have secret desires for sex with homosexuals and transsexual women. They so abhore their secret sexual desires within themselves that they over inflate hatred towards the LGBTQ to disguise their secret "self hating desirous abberrations". It becomes the vengeful fuel that maintains their motivation. There is also a large racist agenda in the alt right movement. Unfounded fear and hatred of Black Lives Matter is seen.. at the root they view Obama as the cause of all these ills. Obama is a secret Muslim and radical black power leader backing domestic terror groups within the USA. Alt right people in short are completely delusional and lack broad education and at their core are some of the most ignorant people on the face of the earth. They are the USA's Taliban. They also are misogynists and often physically and mentally abuse their children.

Then you have Kthx types.. the armchair alt righters. The type who is purely devoted to trolling for their cause. The same driving motivations work for these alt right troll types but they see their job to be the disinformation wing. Repeating absurd statements over and over hoping that their continuous dribble will be eventually taken as a legitimate part of a discussion even though thier facts and talking points are utterly absurd. Trump mentality 101. Repeat it constantly.. and never yield and eventually the masses will believe you.. Thankfully educated people with intelligence this type of strategy they use will never work on.

You are right to a certain extent about all of this, but the problem is that Richard Spencer means absolutely nothing to a majority of people who support Trump, he is just some random dickhead who jumped onto the bandwagon for popularity and is the "extreme" side of the group that nobody actually associates with. People talk about "the alt right, and Richard Spencer" all the time but I literally never hear him brought up in any of my circles, or groups. You are right about the fact that the youth are headed towards more conservative groups, and that is because that is how life is, the counter culture now is freedom of speech. Not being forced to to be careful with everything you say, and its fantastic. PCism needs to die and it is essentially headed that way right now.
