loius stated his dislikes about a few groups, and i stated my dislikes about one in return (oh and i forgot, he made his point as if every single person in the group was what he described). you got a problem with that, take it to oprah. i also stated that i dont know what i believe in. i havent been convinced that there is a god yet, but im not about to say that there isnt by any means. and i didnt meant to advance the arguement for religion at all, i actually only meant to insult louis.

If you read his post closely, I think Lou is just laying a blanket statement that overall, religion (as a whole) tends to cloud issues that have nothing to do with religious beliefs at all. He's not attacking the people themselves.

Plus, let's not act like your statement wasn't "as if every single person in the group was what he described." Putting the old "(not all)" verbal white-out in your original manifesto doesn't clear you of the exact type of discrimination that you damn him for.

The fact that religion clouds issues should not necessarily be counted against a specific religion or religion in general. When people are passionate about things it is often because they are deeply vested it- they have strong emotional feeling and they may even consider those things as part of their identity and their core being. This happens with not only religion, but politics, culture, family. And even with lesser things like SubSpace- look at how so many people are so passionate and irrational when it comes to different zones (SVS vs non-SVS).

Conc, if Louis is ONLY saying that religion clouds issues, that's pretty hard to see. You'd have to ignore a lot of the sentences to get that. I'd say that people passions against religion is just as able to distort the matters at hand.

Anyway, it would be nice to be able to take out of the picture things that make Israel-Palestine a complicated situation but the fact is those things are there and they won't go away.

I disagree. People who justify their actions through their religion generally try to use it as an argumentative crutch (see Dark's recent Trash Talk "homosexuals are okay to make fun of because it goes against God's word"). People who don't use religion as a jump-off point for their opinions have nothing to hide behind--the true feelings of the presenter unabated.

I'd much rather have someone actually disagree with me and have empirical truth rather than mysticism behind their argument.

Haha, I'm going to venture a guess that Dark is not a deeply religious man. I don't think that religion somehow decreases people's ability to express truths and to reason. People who use religion as an "argumentative crutch" may have been weak in that area to begin with. I can't speak for everyone. But I'm with you, I'd prefer empirical truths over mystical arguments.

My main point (since I was feeling a little defensive after reading Lou's post) was that all of religion should not be judged based on the newbies. TW has a lot of newbies but there's more to TW than pubs.
