Good Charlotte SUCKS!

Sorry i gotta go with the "relative" defense here. Bands like Good Charlotte, Sum 41 and Blink 182 arnt bad. Country is BAD, pop is BAD (especially every single boy and girl band). Some hiphop, rap etc... is decent but most is BAD. Relative to most of that stuff, the mainstream "punk" bands are actually decent. You have to realize that to make it big in alternative, rock, pop etc ... u need to have catchy, repetative songs with simple themes that 90% of 16 through 30 year olds can relate to. I personally listen to a lot of alternative mainstream stuff ie Matthew Good Band, Our Lady Piece, Fuel, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots. But, i can appreciate almost any kind of music if i find a specific song relatable or catchy.
Go listen to some classical music stations for a week or two. Really listen to the music, every note and the feelings they can invoke then compare it to the quality of any sort of commercial music these days. All bands that become known turn into sellouts. A band's first album is almost always the best because they had their first 4-8 years to make it when they were probably piss poor working part time minimum wage jobs. After u become rich and famous how much can u really write about that truly relates to the common teenager? Thats why it just seems like bands turn out these catchy 1 or 2 line repeating songs that sound like sad attempts to remember how tough life and love can be.
From my end though, when im driving to and from work (or at work) im half awake and catchy 1 or 2 line repeating songs that i can mouth the words to easily is what im looking for. If i want some deeper meaning stuff that is true music, ill switch to classical 96.3 fm
I really dont think its fair for any of u to bitch about bands like this since every single one of u would do the same given the chance. Most of these bands paid their dues for years (including Good Charlotte) playing in crappy clubs, making just enough to stick with their music so let them have their sellout money. Their music doesnt hurt u, if u dont like it dont listen to it.Last edited by Eric is God; 08-18-2003, 01:31 AM.

there's also a ton of more hazards about signing with a major record label. did you know that some of the bigger labels can record you, then turn around and shelf your cd without releasing it if they don't like it and you can't legally release it yourself until 10 years after your contract expires? i suggest you read over this article to get a better understanding of what happens when someone takes the plunge and sells out. it's not an end-all article, but it's definitely a good place to start reading.

I guess the problem Gerbs is that record companies are just too powerful and amke it very hard for bands to become successful unless they sign with one of the major labels. Most of my knowledge about how the music industry works comes from "the on going history of new music shows" by Alan Cross that i listen to on the Edge, so forgive me if im throwing out semi educated opinions.
I know when a band first signs they get a very strict contract and a a decent signing bonus which is entirely used to fund the making of the album. Most bands usually dont break even for a year or two after the release of that album and thats only if its quite sucessful. Touring is what really brings in the $ since bands usually get a better cut right? From what ive heard about independant bands, they very rarely get their music out to enough people because they dont have music companies promoting their music to all the radi stations or venues to set up concerts. For example, The Salads i think set a record on the Edge with the highest placement ever on their top 30 chart by an independant band when they hit #6 or something. Small, privately owned labels usually dont fair much better ..... anyways my main points were those in the first paragraphs.
Ive listened to a lot of underground, off the path, indy band music and i just dont like it at all. The only bands that were indy that i liked, always end up signing with a major label and their next album(s) always end up sounding more manufactured than real, but thats what happens. I guess im just too lazy to enjoy anything that isnt extremely catchy and repeatative, there is a reason this sort of music is so popular and its just just ebcause the media and corporations make u listen to it over and over again. People in general are very lazy these days, and it seems that it mostly teenagers in their "rebel" phase that tend to listen to indy bands religiously and lash out at mainstream music. -shrugs- if i wanted to listen to something that really meant something that i could just close my eyes and enjoy id throw on some Bach.

I mean, Thursday is no better than Good Charlotte. They just signed to a major, and, actually, both bands did pay their dues playing small clubs. I hate Good Charlotte, but they are from the area, and I know a few kids that knew them before they got big, and before they were signed, they played shitty clubs like most other bands.
I think most bands that are known as "punk" nowadays are way less punk than a lot of "indie" bands. Bands like Les Savy Fav, Liars, and McLusky are all out there re-inventing punk sounds even though they aren't on neccessarily "punk" labels. Truth of the matter is that most of the "punk" you guys are saying is "real", well, isn't. The Bouncing Souls write songs with the same shitty lyrics as Good Charlotte, and are signed to Epitaph, which is practically a major. Yeah.5:gen> man

epitaph started in some guy's garage and worked their way to major status... but they still seem to be compassionate about their bands. they're basic a major label without nazi corporate influence. that epitaph dvd video collection (like 5 bucks) has a big interview and backhistory on epitaph records on it that completely intrigued me, and the people seem to be pretty down to earth about the way they handle things.plopp> im not a newbie ok!! im a butterfly waiting to come out of his coon!

the music industry is crooks. the artist literally get around $1 per CD sold,so if your a band like good charlotte and there are 5 members, you would probably only get 25 cents per CD sold while the other money goes to your bandmates.
If you have an independant label and you own it, you'll get around $10 a cd. but a major promotes you hella lots. Aimee Mann said you literally have to sell 1,000,000 units to break even. but if you go gold (100,000 units) you get a bonus. something like that.Last edited by papist; 08-18-2003, 03:52 PM.Sunshine...

500,000 for gold... but yet, no matter how much a major label artist walks away with, it's still only a fraction of what the label makes off of them. on a smaller label, things are going to be alot more fair because both the label and the artist are dependent on each other.
and alot of those bands who took the plunge and sold out but only had one hit, are most likely fucked in bankruptcy by now.plopp> im not a newbie ok!! im a butterfly waiting to come out of his coon!
