i hope this crackdown doesnt work. i was hoping that the corporate music world would just die. of course artists deserve to get paid for their work, but some dork in a $5,000 suit doesnt deserve to drive a different bentley every day of the week thanks to the CDs they sell for 20 fucking dollars each these days. before there were records, tapes, or CDs, there were still amazing musicians, who still had plenty to eat...and they had complete control of the direction of their music.
There exists a fine line between hard partying and destitution.
So by getting rid of production companies, how the hell are the artists going to get their money? You get rid of the production companies, there will not be anymore mainstream music, the only music we will have is underground, and the rich bands of today.
Underground will then never have a chance to become mainstream, so you'll be paying for shows, and having a hard time finding new music on the internet.
There is no way I am paying 20+$ for a cd from which I like only 2 songs. If they wanna make me by more music then the little shit fucks will lower the prices of cd's and also artist will start putting more effort in their music. I wonder what the music industry is gaining from suing a 12 year old girl. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 5 years the only way for artists to survive is to hold concerts.

well the problem is that most of the mainstream musicians have no clue how to do things themselves. if a band wanted to set up their own studio and get professional results, it would only take around $2,000 ($1500 for a good multitrack recorder and $500 for a decent set of mics). merchandise like shirts and hats are super cheap to make and pay back well over double what you spend, providing you are capable of designing logos and art yourself. and distribution is dirt cheap as well if you invest with the right people. the low-end of what you'd spend would still probably be less than what you'd pay for instruments and amps.
i'm totally convinced the do-it-yourself mentality is the best option for bands, provided they're intelligent enough to do it.
and, for the record, i'm all about sharing my own music online for free. it's the best and cheapest way to get it heard, which leads to more shows in different places, and ultimately enough money to eat.

turn off your file sharing... they bust you for destributing music, if people don't download from you, you're not gonna get sued.

that's why most bands do put mp3's on mp3.com ... but they don't want their whole album being ripped.

well that's up to artist discretion... but by no means does it even come close to justifying $18+ a cd. most smaller labels and independent musicians distribute their cds for $10 or less and still cover their costs quite nicely.
have you seen the prices of mainstream cd's lately? i buy dvds for cheaper than they're charging for that shit.

think about it this way, if RIAA does this and no ones gives a hoot, crap like NSync or Britney spears wont put out music (they do it for the money, obviously)
