WW2 was believed by many at the time to be the end of the world (or western civilization). Those were some scary times.
P.S. Traveling to the future is trivial. Preserve yourself in a cryogenic chamber and wake up 1000 years from now. There are also lots of relativistic tricks you could pull to make your time progress slower than everyone else's. Of course, this is impractical at the moment because it requires a massive amount of energy (near-light speed space travel is also impractical for the same reason).
Why would anyone want to travel to the future anyway? You're taking a big risk. Imagine finding yourself the only living human on a barren, desolate earth. On the other hand, you might end up in a futuristic utopia.'vet' is the new 'newb'.
