Typing: Home-keys or freestyle?

Well the other day my study group had to type a paper and I volunteered to type because I'm cool like that. I started typing and was immediately ridiculed for not using the traditional typing methods (home-keys, etc.). I, of course, learned these in school but I grew out of them after I started playing Subspace and other online games. It seemed very bothersome to me to set your fingers back on the home-keys while you are playing to type something to a teammate (ie. Regroup, coordinates, etc.). I've heard that typing traditionally is faster but I still think I'm pretty quick not using them.

What do you think? Or rather, what do you use and why?

When you play games on your keyboard, you hold your fingers above the controls you'll need most, right? Like having your fingers held over the arrow keys or the WASD group of keys. That's not any different than keeping your fingers over the home-key positions when typing.

Uhhhhhhh. You know the most common letters are, like, T, E, A, I, etc? Are you on a devorak keyboard or do you have a weird hand position for "home keys"? :P I'm justr saying I don't use : nearly as much as I use E.

I'm slowly working on being able to type with my left hand while using the arrow keys to steer.

i just started keyboarding class and the teacher said that he sees people come in and get like 40words a minute but its hard to get better unless you use the home keys way......

I always hold my left hand over the WSAD and my right over the Arrow Keys. Home Keys are for newborts

i type 120 wpm on typer shark all thanks to home keys.

Two Finger = 45 wpm and lots of typos.

I just type how it easiest to me, I don't know if i'm doing it right or not, but I get very few typos and more wpm than anyone I know in RL.

the ones with the bumps on them. you're supposed to put your index fingers there and the rest of your fingers on the keys right by them.

jkl; = right hand

I just hold my hands over the keyboard and get punching. I don't make a concious effort to use the home keys but my fingers are in that general area and I use my index, middle and fourth fingers

I usually use home keys for 125~ wpm (depending of course on how urgent the msg is)
