I'm Australian and I use trousers to describe any kind of pants (not underwear) that aren't jeans or tracksuit pants (trakky-daks, we call them) that are best suited to formal wear such as business attire.
The word pants I would use to describe the same, but moreso when referring to casual wear such as khakis, or even knee length shorts.
In any case, it's two different words for the same bloody thing. (BTW, pantaloons is archaic. The only place I think you might find it used is in the French foreign legion, or just France in general :P )Comment
