  • Keeping up with music

This is mainly aimed at people who listen to LOTS AND LOTS of different music.

How do you find out about all the old stuff you should listen to? Every once in a while someone who I know will work with someone from an older, more underground band (Eg: Pajo in Zwan, Anybody in Probot, etc) and I'll find out about their older bands that way. Occasionally I'll get into a new genre and use allmusic.com to find out what the must-have albums are (like Joy Division for Goth Rock) but mostly I'm just clueless.

How do you find out about newer stuff?
Is there a secret newspaper somewhere that talks about all the up and coming secret indie bands? I'll pick up on a couple of bands that get mentioned on the forums or randomly grab something on my own and get lucky, but by and large I'm just clueless.

How do you fucking find time to listen to it all?
I spent two hours last night just listening to 1 or 2 minute samples from my meager list of "bands I gotta check out". Seriously, if I actually owned all the music I hear and like, I have no idea how I'd ever listen to it all.

I listen to metal mostly, and I read metal messageboards and websites to find out about all the upcoming releases, etc. The one messageboard I frequent has tons of people that know tons of shit about thousands of bands. Great place to find recommendations and info, etc.

Most of the time I am on SoulSeek in the different chatrooms talking about new underground bands. If you spend at least 15 minutes in the indie chatroom you will have 5 new, awesome bands to listen to.

I pretty much read reviews at Pitchfork (www.pitchforkmedia.com) and at this point I've listened to enough music that they listen to that I understand most of the references that they make and can tell what I'd like based on their reviews. As far as listening to music goes, I used Soulseek when my connection wasn't stupid and let me download stuff, but now I just buy a CD here and there. Also, I talk to people about music and check out their recommendations. If you want me to recommend some indie bands, let me know what you like and I'll try to come up with some things in the same vein.

            How to find time?
Buy a iPod and keep it on all the time, that way you can listen to about 16 hours of music every day.

You can keep up with new bands by watching a locally/ nationally made music program or read your local music newspaper. Note: please dont tell me you dont have one where you live, because you probably do you just havent found it or else get the one that you can find that is the closest otherwise read Rolling Stone or NME or Kerrang any famous mag. And all the people from probot are really really famous thats the whole point Dave Grohl wanted to meet up with all these legends, so if you didnt know those bands before then reading/watching the local media isnt gonna do it for you, you will have to do some more research. If you get one of those classic music programs then watch that, they are pretty good when it comes to old legends. Although bands like Black Sabbath and Motorhead almost never get air play and the only way i found out about em was by watching rockumentaries and thier name just kept on comming up (so they must be good).

Where do you get these samples from? Just download a couple of MP3's from kazaa?

Band websites, mostly. If that failed, artistDirect or amazon.com sometimes will have samples.

Once you find a good band Amazon can be a useful tool. The "Customers who bought this title also bought" brought me lots of good bands. :]

Under Multimedia, is probably the best source of the latest Korean and Japanese (more korean) music, videos, and performance vids.

For chinese music, the best source that is free is www . mikemike . com
There are some porn banners on there, nothing "biggy". Just a warning tho.

WinMX is alot better for latest chinese music as well, compared to Kazaa Lite, which isn't the best source for asian music.
