This is your basic stereotype of all rap music, however, there is rap music outside of MTV. If this intrigues you (as it should), I highly suggest you check out the Non-Prophets, MF Doom, or pretty much anything off of AntiCon.

As far as Shade's question, I mostly get reccommendations from friends and build off of them. I usually listen to music while I'm studying, and I study a good amount of time, allowing me an ample amount of time to listen to music (I'll see if anyone catches that).

SoulSeek's always good. I still go really old-school and hop on IRC to pick up stuff. This is a rather archaic method though, and unless you've got a few good chan-ops for friends, it's hard to get anywhere. As Face said, PitchFork is another good resource. And last but not least, check out local venues for show posters. You never know when you're going to stumble upon a local band that totally kicks ass.
