I think if Continuum/Subspace would get buyable again it would gain more money then now, PriitK wouldn't have to work as much then maybe. Because since we all know there are a LOT of players who plays this game. And if all the addicts (myself) saw that you had to buy you would. And ofcourse try to make friends and other buy it. I think that would be great and make it last longer.

Ya i agree, if i had to go to a store pay 50$ or whatnot for a regular computer game and i can play it w/o paying nemore then i wouldnt mind doin it probably, but if i had to pay so much per month then i an addicted person to this game would drop it. I can get another hobby. I agree with whoever said it, The population is high now, but u put a fee on this shiiz and it'd drop to 200 ppl tops at peek time.

As long as the player base is there, the game will be there. If we had to buy Continuum, a one time fee for the software and then free updates for life, I suppose it wouldn't kill the player base. If we had to pay to play, bye bye spaceships.

Well, if SS were for sale again, and we had someone like, for discussion's sake EA (hypothetical, don't get on a rant how ea won't want this game) take this game. I'd wonder what would happen to the servers themselves. Like, would there be EA hosted servers, Gamespy servers? Would they take over current high-pop servers? I dunno. I wouldn't think that someone would ever take this game out for retail again tho, if you ask me.

Oh gods, any company other than EA would be better. I played UO for 4 years and watched them take was Origin had built up and send it flying to the ground in a fireball of bile and puss. Just take a look at any UO forums, they turned UO into "diabloquest". I worked for a UO community page for a couple years (stratics if you're curious) and saw firsthand what the changes EA pushed did to the community. Had to clean up after people more than once, being a mod sucked over there.

Anyway.

If SS went pay to play, mark my words the playerbase would shrink down to almost nothing, just look at Infantry. Unless it was a one time fee, say $10. Then it wouldn't be as bad. After that it would be a case of advertising to get the playerbase back up. One or two ads in places like Fark would probably triple the playerbase. Or melt the server. Probably both.

Doubtful at best. The server software is publicly available for anyone,
as well as the continuum client. I think the point of it being made free
and available to anyone.. in perpetuity there, is what will ensure it
doesn't die. No matter what happens as long as there is a copy of the
software.. someone somewhere could get it, and put up a server,
and voila. Yeah I think TW and everything PriitK has done and continues
to do is awesome, hands down it's a nice thing he and people on staff do
to put their time into doing stuff for people they don't even -know-.
Who knows.. a comet could destroy the earth before SS and TW goes
anywhere.

I think pay by usage would be better than monthly like 50 free hours or what not and then you pay like a few dollars every few hundred hours, I don't think many people would mind that... although ?go afk would be empty :P

Anyway i am sure that isnt a problem for now and if we get into a problem we can all sort somthing out .
Truth is, this sort of games was always in my and in my friends dreams when we were kids playing "combat" in atari .
I think "combat" is the first ?go duel ever made .
If this game ever goes offline I know i gonna miss it more then any game i ever played .
There are so many cool games that passed without notice and died .
I wish they made "Xenon3,4,5 ..."

Pay to play? Are you guys insane? Barely anyone bought SS the first time it came out, what makes you think that people would pay for a 7 year old game now?

SS is popular because it's free. Because people can play it like solitare, just a few mins when they're bored. The actual 'hard core' population is smaller than you may think, and I'd say even most of them would not pay to play this game.

How long will SS last? I think the day that PriitK gets bored with SS and decides to stop paying for servers will be the beginning of the end. TW would probably end, and so would the billing server. Someone would surely set up a new biller, but most people, seeing the game not working for a while would just stop coming and SS would die a slow death.

That's my prediction anyway. Of course practically EVERYONE thought this game was going to die 5-6 years ago so who knows
