  • Computer Controlled Players

Hey guys, not sure if this has been brought up already but am gonna throw it out anyway. Just curious how far are we from seeing Computer Controlled Players in Continuum. Would be nice if someone was able to log on, type ?go #ahsgagd and set the skill level, ship type and amount of players to play against alone. Post your opinions and thoughts here.

Well after these twl qualifications, I will spend alot of my time looking into the Tw botcore api... I already skimmed thru it and it might just be possible to Computer Controlled Players (AI Autonomous Ships).

I use to play this game www.xpilot.org, its graphically not as good as COntinuum.. but it had this feature when you went into an area.

So yeah, I thought about this like 1 year ago and would be fun to see it implented in SS. However, it might be difficult, and I have't fully look into this.

Glad to see others have interest in this.... as I do.

Although I put some thought into this, and thought it would be cool, this could really hurt the game. Then you have the danger of a player making a "god-mode" bot or something, and having a bot better then all players. While you might be able to stop this, it would add another risk of cheating. Also, if you want to practice, shouldnt you play elim, duel, wbduel, ect. that way you not only help yourself, but other players as well. Just my ideas.

        I think that's false!

Bots today are all staff controlled and ran through the server itself. Even if a random player makes a bot, it can't do shit but your normal run 'n' gun 'n' die because it does not have any STAFF powers such as those of MODS, etc. I see no greater risk of cheating. Making such bots possible is like today's bots, only except they can type "ESC-1" and fondle with the ctrl and arrow keys. No difference from typing in *arena Baseelim is about to begin to the whole zone. Therefor, the game isn't hurt at all but grows a whole lot more.

Buckaroo Banzi made a bot to play for him last year, but it could really only just spin around and shoot so we gave up on the idea.

"AI" bots have already been attempted however.. all of the ones made so far have failed to live up to expectations. I doubt anything will ever be developed in that regard that would be of any use.

I think it would be nearly impossible to make a bot cleevr enough. If someone would make one it wouldn't take long to figure out how it works and it would become like scoring in the old NHL games, where one trick makes a goal every single time.

I talked about this with NOCKM and he said it would probable BE possible....
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...

sure it's possible. But it would take loads of time to program it, and the result would be disappointing.

Someone hosted deathmatch once where the bot flew spinning round, bouncing off walls and firing thors, it was like 30 people v 1 bot and was rock solid.

Yeh.. just ask a bot nerd to program a bot to do something like that

Thanks to all you posted on what has been done so far or attempts at making AI players. I trust what Mythrandir says, it wouldn't be easy and the results wouldn't be that great. But still it would be an interesting challenge and when I think about it...if they can do it in Xpilot, why not SS?

It would be sort of funny having a TWDD squad - (BORGS), with all AI computer players, lol...

Imagine if this automated twdd squad could take the best human twld squad.... it would be like a Kasprov Chessmaster being defeated by Deep Blue Supercomputer moment..lol

Re: Bots used for cheating issue
-Any bot that runs on a Zone server, would have to be verified for Zone Dev staff..to make sure its not doing anything to make the server unstable or allowing people to cheat.
-Only the Sysop, SMOD, or some staffers have the ability to spawn a bot.

In some small zone i saw a bot which would follow and shoot at a designated player. It wasn't much cop at dodging though

I was fiddling around a bit and i could get the bot to shoot at a chosen target. I had to set it in ship but then i used !target <name> and it would spin and shoot at it. Lots of fun me and tyflyias had in our zone.

i like the idea of having a zone where players can enter private arenas, and duel the bots.. and who said it would be difficult. nintendo put out thousands of game with single player capabilities.. in under 8M
