  • To the community from Trench Wars Upper Staff

    Trench Wars Community:

On behalf of Trench Wars Staff, we want to congratulate the community on another successful TWDT season, marking 30 years this game has brought joy, anguish, anger and laughter to our community. Trench Wars is a reminder of when the internet was a smaller place, filled with familiar faces. Arguably the best part of this game is our tight-knit community that has been together for decades.

TW Staff’s goal over the decades has been to create a haven for this community to enjoy the game they love with their spaceship friends. There have been great successes and failures, with most actions falling somewhere in between. With that being said, it's time for some course correction.

SpookedOne has resigned from his role as TW Dev and SMod. TW Staff greatly appreciates all his efforts, most of which have gone unnoticed by the community. While sometimes controversial, he has contributed significantly to the zone. However, some changes made were not in alignment with TW's mission of working in close coordination with the community, and interactions had become at times hostile. As staff we try to serve the community and take feedback in a healthy manner, keep interactions as professional as possible, and protect players from abuse. Lately, our efforts to these ends have failed.

Moving forward, TW Staff is happy to welcome back KrynetiX and X-Demo as staff members and developers. We ask for your patience and courtesy as we enter this transition phase. As always, we require your feedback as to what is working and what is not—and some assistance on the directions to move forward.

Some may ask how exactly we got to this point, and why actions were not taken before now. The answer is the same for much of this community’s problems. This game is (slowly) declining. As the playerbase dwindles, TW Staff population has decreased as well. People move on, get busy, or are driven off by angry voices. Staff is a team of volunteers, but the nature of the work needed leads to burnout and quitting. Sometimes that means loud, personal essays on the forums, and sometimes it is very quiet.

As members of staff, especially upper staff, quit logging in, responsibility and power had been consolidated. Moderator actions, whether those were development choices or bans, needed only to be justified to a smaller and smaller crew, and eventually any moderator could be judge, jury and executioner. This is not consistent with TW's principles, but it's where we're currently at.

It's critically important to keep TW Staff honest, and the first line of defense (upper staff) has been idle as of late. Actions need to be taken moving forward to correct this issue. Please stand by. For the playerbase, please continue to make your voice heard. The ideal places for feedback are the TW Discord, these forums, or in game to any staff member. It may not always feel like your voice is heard, but we will continue to do our best to take your opinions into account.

Thanks for remaining dedicated to this little spaceship game we all love. Wishing you and your family health and happiness in the new year.

    -Trench Wars Upper Staff

Thank you Qan and upper staff for taking action to make the game a healthy environment for all again! I look forward to see the direction the zone/leagues/events go in the future with these changes and hope to see some old friends hop back on in the days to come

Every absentee sysop of the last 10 years logged in last night at the exact same time spook "resigned" -- amazing coincidence!

Marie Antoinette voluntarily stepped down her head from her shoulders as thousands of angry people gathered at Place de la Concorde. Crazy timing as well!

pub is still broken. can you share a roadmap, or share more about next steps?

            current issues:
            - the spawns are buggy, 50/50 chance to spawn at the complete other side of map, or near base. makes sense when 10v10, but not in 1v1, just kills the flag game.

            - server laggy i cant explain why or how

            - idk what those ship settings are but its not the one we've had the past few years, for example weasel has no energy drain while cloaked/stealth, there even is energy regen while cloaked/stealth which is OP

            - there is nowhere to score the ball as far as i can tell

            - fireworks don't work

            - shufflevote doesn't work

            - you can buy boost as lev, but you cannot use it

The weasel is a prime example of overpowered and historically it either had full cloak/stealth + big ship or small ship and only cloak. Also, it should always drain energy to cloak. It seems this weasel has everything.

Look forward to a new era of sane defaults and then, most important NOT touching it again unless absolutely necessary.

Map/base itself will be adjusted back to the classic tileset and may open up the flagroom for some more room (we used to have this setup perfectly). This is simply a matter of a rollback to when it was working well + no blank tiles, fixed spawns, restored regions, undoing some changes. Look forward to **minimal** pub changes and then hands off. Constantly messing with pub map and settings is a historic hard no.

MMR fixes: there's consensus on what needs to be fixed. Players argue a bit over specifics, but the basics = everyone agrees on. I have never been a TWD/MMR/TWL player, not a competitive player, so I'll simply be implementing what works without injecting my own opinions (I have zero).

Sudden changes without explanation = gone.

Constant changes to settings = gone (fix once and stop touching it).

Trench Wars on ASSS = resume development. Timed, scheduled events on ASSS. One league game on ASSS. Baby steps as we finish what we started in 2015.

Abusing power = gone. I don't run around doing such things.

For those who don't know me, I was head dev when we lead the steam initiative, got rid of dev quotas and made it actually fun for devs to contribute their time when they can, TWDev created a record number of fun games/events, almost finished the ASSS server, and just generally had a good run. I keep a low profile and didn't come back looking to disrupt anything, rather the opposite. I came back to help my friends in subspace and mostly my home zone - Trench Wars.

It seems the players have grown accustomed to living with broken things. We will be taking care of the biggest issues first and then working down the list. Once the core issues are fixed you can expect new 2025 quality events, perhaps remakes of old beloved events, low-priority improvements (i.e. cosmetic things), high quality improvements (i.e. ASSS server), and just a generally smooth player experience. We shouldn't be accustomed to things being broken, and step by step we'll get everything in order.

Minimal approach = no sweeping changes. Once it's good we stop touching it unless it's obviously necessary.

I'm glad to be back and you can look forward to a clean, functional pub. Clean, functional MMR games. Lowest friction changes and an improved user experience.

Sanity restored. Exactly what I said needed to happen back in the discord fallout earlier this year. Thank you. Long live Pure TW

Mentioning the last thing that pissed me off, just to make sure it's captured somewhere:

In MMRB there's a setting to limit the rating of who can play within a certain range. At face value it looks like a fairly generous range, but if you're a UK/EU player like me who will never get enough games played for their rating to rise to the correct value because games barely ever happen in my timezone, I will always have a rating which prevents me from playing when this setting is enabled.

                      Option 1: Delete this setting.

Option 2: Manually correct the ratings, presumably using TWDT stars. (I'm aware people want this anyway for team balance reasons)
