Trench Wars Community:
On behalf of Trench Wars Staff, we want to congratulate the community on another successful TWDT season, marking 30 years this game has brought joy, anguish, anger and laughter to our community. Trench Wars is a reminder of when the internet was a smaller place, filled with familiar faces. Arguably the best part of this game is our tight-knit community that has been together for decades.
TW Staff’s goal over the decades has been to create a haven for this community to enjoy the game they love with their spaceship friends. There have been great successes and failures, with most actions falling somewhere in between. With that being said, it's time for some course correction.
SpookedOne has resigned from his role as TW Dev and SMod. TW Staff greatly appreciates all his efforts, most of which have gone unnoticed by the community. While sometimes controversial, he has contributed significantly to the zone. However, some changes made were not in alignment with TW's mission of working in close coordination with the community, and interactions had become at times hostile. As staff we try to serve the community and take feedback in a healthy manner, keep interactions as professional as possible, and protect players from abuse. Lately, our efforts to these ends have failed.
Moving forward, TW Staff is happy to welcome back KrynetiX and X-Demo as staff members and developers. We ask for your patience and courtesy as we enter this transition phase. As always, we require your feedback as to what is working and what is not—and some assistance on the directions to move forward.
Some may ask how exactly we got to this point, and why actions were not taken before now. The answer is the same for much of this community’s problems. This game is (slowly) declining. As the playerbase dwindles, TW Staff population has decreased as well. People move on, get busy, or are driven off by angry voices. Staff is a team of volunteers, but the nature of the work needed leads to burnout and quitting. Sometimes that means loud, personal essays on the forums, and sometimes it is very quiet.
As members of staff, especially upper staff, quit logging in, responsibility and power had been consolidated. Moderator actions, whether those were development choices or bans, needed only to be justified to a smaller and smaller crew, and eventually any moderator could be judge, jury and executioner. This is not consistent with TW's principles, but it's where we're currently at.
It's critically important to keep TW Staff honest, and the first line of defense (upper staff) has been idle as of late. Actions need to be taken moving forward to correct this issue. Please stand by. For the playerbase, please continue to make your voice heard. The ideal places for feedback are the TW Discord, these forums, or in game to any staff member. It may not always feel like your voice is heard, but we will continue to do our best to take your opinions into account.
Thanks for remaining dedicated to this little spaceship game we all love. Wishing you and your family health and happiness in the new year.
