Photoshop (www.adobe.com) -- Expensive, but the worlds best graphic making program.
Paint Shop Pro (www.jasc.com) -- Affordable, good for the beginniners.

adobe photoshop - the beginning and end of all graphics projects. no professional can live without it or one of its clones (paintshop pro, etc). this program will do anything you want it to, and then some.
adobe illustrator - works hand-in-hand with photoshop, this program focuses on freeform drawing and detailing. you can use photoshop to achieve the same thing, but it's more time-consuming. coreldraw is the non-adobe equivalent to illustrator.
3dstudio max - 3d modelling program.. somewhat easy to use, but difficult to get total realism. most of your renders will look cartoony (think toy story)
lightwave - same as 3dstudio max, but replace "cartoony" with "realistic" and "somewhat easy to use" with "a total bitch to learn, and quite tedious even if mastered." kicks complete ass for lighting effects though.
softimage - hands-down best 3d program available. it'll do everything from modelling to non-linear editing. and it's not that hard to learn. the only drawback is that you need a truly hardcore system to run it. but if you can run it, you'll be using the premiere hollywood 3d effects program.
poser, raydream, and bryce - the bottom of the 3d totem pole. incredibly easy to use and you get a mediocre-looking result. poser is for humanoid figures, raydream is for freeform modelling, and bryce is for constructing landscapes.
those are some of the programs i've had to learn for my profession. all of them are quite good in their own right, but i mainly stick with photoshop and lightwave for my stuff, occasionally dipping into the quick-but-crappy programs if i'm trying to meet a deadline.

I use Lightwave but sadly I just suck at all "normal" non-modelling art programs (like Photoshop).
I don't get it myself why it can be so hard to do a decent 2d pic when making 3d models and animations are fairly easy to do after getting used to the program. I have used Photoshop for 2 years now and I STILL can't make a texture to my models...
I truely envy those with artistic skills... Luckily I do music too

agreed, i brought cinema4d a few months ago, and am impressed, there are more resources on the internet for 3dsmax and lightwave though.
It depends what you want to do, if i wanted to build a car or similar i would use Lighwave with Modeler, if i was doing a street scene with complex textures and shapes i would use cinema4d.
Photoshop is the only real tool out there, yes there are others but none come near, a program which i can honestly say, that there are no elements which need improving.
- Version 6 upwards have better text management. Anything below does funny spacing between letters.
Also, photoshop can be confusing at first, especially if you come from a corel background/experience.
I wouldnt suggest Paint Shop Pro as a basic alternative to photoshop though. Ive only experienced up to 5, and would say its closer to a more advanced version of paint.
A good alternative to photosop would be Corel PaintShop, which i think is part of the Draw package, dont quote me on that though.
