I can remember playing Asheron's Caul and being Player Killer, and the fact that my video card wasn't that great and I didn't have much RAM did aid in my dying quite often, but it's just another thing you had to deal with and I learned to play with it. I'm sure there are people who play on 1024 in continuum.

And as far as better hardware goes, jeeze a Pentium 3 550 can probably play in 1600x1200 res. A 19" monitor doesn't cost much today. Unless of course you want to use an LCD screen that can only go up to 1280 res. Of course an LCD Screen that displays 1280 res is way more expensive than a CRT monitor that can display 1600 res, so you can hardly call it killer equipement or more expensive. You chose to get that expensive LCD monitor.

You don't exactly need killer kit to play in 1600 res.

Of course, anyone who specifically buys equipement just to play SS better really needs to go to a special hospital

On the other hand you can't force that completely. There are peole who can't do larger than 640x480.

Am I the only one finding this whole better resolution thing a bit weird? This is the only game I've played where resolution plays such an important role. So why can't there be a resize thing? As in, better resolution just gives a bit more accurate graphics, but you can't see further. Then you could set this vision size to whatever you want. Well... of course it should be limited in some arenas, but I think mostly it could be pretty unlimited. (Or maybe limited by default to radar size.) If someone wants to play "hunt the red pixel with some blue pixels under it" it's his problem.

Actually... It might be possible to make a program (if there isn't one already.) that tells windows the resolution is 1600x1200 (for example), but in reality, the screen is drawn in 800x600, with resized image. I haven't looked into this though, and it sounds like a nasty hack that would have to be in the video card drivers. It would be a lot easier, faster and more secure to implement this to the client itself, but the development hasn't exactly been active. <_<

(On the other hand if there was a program like that, it could be used for other things too.)

The change in resolution would be helpful when using my laptop. Currently I must play TW in windowed format when on the laptop. But with a res. change I could actually play on the widescreen w/o the windowed format.

Either way it really does not matter too much, but I would think that people using LCD or Plasma widescreens would want the res change.
