a) was a foundation, a second source (atleast it's a source, I could dug up these players and get them to confirm), to support the main part b), where he brags about doing it.

Here you got 2 clues pointing on him, and he could've said that it was him 4 attention, but then again I don't think squadless ever were that sad.
