OK we now have a dbot which has managed to die at least twice in an under 2 hour session but without recycling the server.

Good job! Hope this means that Distension gets hosted regularly again.

Question: Is it perhaps a little oversensitive? Twice in a lightly populated session is perhaps even more unstable than it was previously.

Problem: We now have to get the bot restarted at odd times when it suicides. Distension staff are going to be absent, busy, AFK or otherwise unavailable much of the time.

Ideally dbot would somehow just stop using resources until it could detect normal data flow and then pick up the game where it left off but this might be difficult to achieve. Could we make it so dbot automatically restarts on a timer or when it detects normal data flow? Perhaps we need another bot for this?
If not then could some of us Distension veterans be given power to restart it?

If it would worsen the problem to message everyone before suiciding then perhaps we could have a special restart message to explain that the bot was forced to sacrifice itself due to lag and that it is now back. And perhaps to warn us that we shouldn't all jump back in at once or we may kill it again. (I think this happened the first time it died)

Minor issue: It seemed to not update the base graphic when manually restarted after dying in a 2 base game and then only having players for a 1 base game. I didn't look to see whether south base doors were there or not.

distension sucks... why have a wb in distension if it sucks in every way possible?

why do spiders shoot the same type of bullets but can spray them while the wb can shoot one time and recharge? it gets no special abilities and overal is a trash ship in distension

I realize you wanted to nerf it, but why nerf it so much that it is useless and obsolete? Fix it already.

It isn't that bad: Yes it has high fire costs but it has reasonable energy, is fast and can dodge without afterburner. It has fast bullets which can be upgraded to L3 quite early (at level 31 whereas spiders dont get L2s until level 47) and it can also have a mine, escape pods and thors. It also has that special that sometimes lets it briefly spam out slow bombs: Often we are so busy laughing we forget to dodge and they actually kill us!

Despite its drawbacks I enjoy playing mine and some players get to high rank with them.

Stabwound said this before qan came along and apparently fixed the server recycling problem which was tested during the earlier weekday scheduled time.

Stabwound then tried to host it for the later session and the bot appeared to die again but this time twice within seconds of him starting it up. The server did not recycle. Possibly qan tried to tweak it again in between sessions and left another bug. Or perhaps the server was laggier in the later session for some reason.

It may be safer on the server but looks as though something still needs some tweaking.

Stabwound said in a post that it was causing recycles so it wouldn't be hosted. Viruk came on afterwards and said that it had been hosted without crashing the server, but that it was buggy and crashed several times (just dbot, not the servers). He then asked if it could be hosted more, since it the server recycle bug appeared to be fixed, even if other bugs were still present (that didn't affect people outside of the distension arena).

What's so hard to understand? In my book, that's putting 2 and 2 together.

But once again, you've contributed naught to this thread, trolling one of the players who doesn't come on this forum to troll other people, but to post suggestions. If it was just cheese, then I could understand. But Viruk actually tries to improve upon the game in most of his posts.

Uh, running the bot for one session without a recycle doesn't mean that he fixed the recycle problem. You play Distension enough to know that it doesn't recycle every single time it runs, not to mention the countless times qan has unsuccessfully tried to fix the problem with a solution that was supposed to fix it for good.

Frankly, I'm pretty annoyed by the whining and complaining about how I haven't been running the game lately. I'm sorry, but it would be irresponsible to just keep running it when it's been causing server recycles so often lately. You guys know how many times it's recycled, yet we continued to run it in hopes that it was a fluke, or that qan's small fixes would remedy it, but this was never the case. No matter what you think, the fact is that it's completely unacceptable to have a single subarena disrupt the rest of the zone.

The game is back in testing mode, which means it isn't going to be running on a schedule until it's proven that these latest fixes will stop the server from recycling. Also, the bot will probably die multiple times per session until the 'sweet spot' is found (if there even is one) and will likely not be restarted unless one of the few Distension-playing staffers is playing. On a side note, the disconnection time was so small that the bot couldn't even log in during peak hours without disconnecting until qan tweaked it yesterday (currently untested, though).
