I believe the only way to keep subspace/continuum alive is to keep developing. New developments and inventions are exciting and attract people, just look at Distension. It was new, exciting and fun. It got played alot when it was new and it even got staff all heated up because it was taking players away from other hosted events.
Same goes for hosted events, hosting the same deathmatch event over and over gets boring. Zone staff should innovate themselves and try to host original, new, events. However, primarily they should just lots of original events, the events are what makes Trench Wars in my opinion.
On another front, a harder one though, I believe Subspace can only survive if we develop a new client that is playable on a webpage (flash / Java Applet?), on an iPhone, on a Android phone and on Java Mobile Edition for all other phones. The game as we know it can be compared to the games that are played on such smartphones nowadays - why not join them.
P.S. I've removed alot of off-topic replies. Is it so hard to keep a normal on-topic discussion about a subject? If some people keep up posting off-topic replies, I'll persue a different course of action against those people instead of removing the replies only.

Mmaverick, why don't you take some time to reset elim ranks instead of spend so much time filtering threads for off-topic replies

Imo the best way to make sure subspace doesnt die, would be to merge zones. Seriously.
It has been done before in small scale and for example svs zones were forced to do that when the playerbase started to decline. After the merge (dueling zone etc) into chaos it kinda revived the zone for a good long time. Now it's losing players again just like tw and other zones seem to be doing also.
Tinkering with arenas and making small rule adjustments won't even delay the end for long, but perhaps making big adjustments and perhaps a merge or two would go a long way towards extending subspaces "life".
Sure, the newbies in zones would not perhaps like these adjustments, but hey they can still stick in their pub if they want to, not like they are contributing players (most of them) in leagues, elims, events (other than the newb events and mass-rapings like zombies). If you think about it, for example for twl it really doesn't matter if we have 1 or 4 pubs full of ppl playing while twl matches are being played. Sure some of them now and then decide to compete with other squads and perhaps start to play leagues and such, but relying on that for the source of new twd and twl players isn't the best way perhaps.
If we were to merge zones, it would make it easier for ppl to experiment with other settings, rules, arenas, leagues and just try out stuff and maybe start to like it. I know I'd love it. In any zone its the ppl who play in leagues and such that have the most talent and can adopt different settings the best (usually), with more ppl like that trying other zones it could seriously boost the playerbase, and in every zone there are the pub newbs who don't really play anything else and don't influence the number of squads in league or the level of competition. I mean come on, a lot of players in tw play other zones too (me included) and in other zones its the same way. I believe nowadays new talent comes from other zones perhaps even faster than from among the pubbers. Just look at some of the ppl playing in tw leagues.
This is something I think would work in the long run better than what we are doing now. I'd just hope staff in different zones would see how much bigger the benefits are compared to the smallish loss of zone independence.
For example I liked when zone66 was adapted into tw and played that some, but it was done so late the zone was pretty much dead already.
TW ideas:
Also we could try out some crazy stuff, like what about basing with like 15 v 15 or 12 v 12, with 2 entrances and perhaps 2 terrs and more flags or just 1 flag with 2 entrances or whatever. You get my point. Shake things up a bit. Let's at least try whats it like with twd twl caliber players instead of the usual mindless pubbers.
In spider league remove the bricks and make it about killing the other team out rather than points. Much more fun that way.
Merge elims, please do it before the arenas die out completely. What the hell are you waiting for?? Yes fancy new arenas, yet the old one with elim and belim merged was simply the best. Even ppl who complained about having to play with a jav or a wb still played, and got better.
Ok please comment.
:greedy:
Actually that's exactly what is killing the population. Turning the zone into a competitive community (TWD, purepub etc. - these things made the zone interesting for me though) is what drives away the casual players. We should focus on the aspects in pubs which used to attract masses.
Are you saying that having 4-8 pubs running like we did before and most of them full don't contribute as much as subarenas?
What made TW different was that it has pretty much been the only zone where you can at least get a semi-warm welcome. You could say that without TW the whole game might pretty much be dead already.
So the last thing we want to do is to repeat the mistake the SVS-zones and some others did. You can't force casual and semi-casual players into joinin elitist communities. If you lose public arenas or make them uninteresting/complex with bots/not the main focus of the game, you lose these players.
So... My solution:
Everyone needs an attitude check (including me) and we need to focus our efforts on public arenas. It is the players who are the first contact to a total newbie in the game not bots, staff or settings.
So if you see someone asking a lot of questions in blue text take 5 minutes of your time and secure us a new player. Also if you're sitting on a subarena and someone who is about to start taking part in other stuff besides just pub enters: "how do I play this?", "why can't I enter?" etc. It's a fair trade adjusting your usual reaction for setting someone on the right track to becoming competitive.
It only takes a couple months for a player to become competitive in TW after the proper spark is struck. And what's the best part...? You don't even need previous SS experience! I've seen a lot of helpfulness while visiting in other zones but as Raspi said "talent from other zones" is preferred over the REAL newbies.
Can we really afford to be picky?
people quit because stupid mofos get on staff and then recruit more stupid mofos, last "event" i went to the fucking ER didn't even know the proper commands and ended up just fucking it up so everyone left, how about training these idiots? how about less random bans over "pub chat harrassment" lol?
it's staffs/stupid trolls, fault the population is declining idiots like Adam don't make people wanna stay
I know you're all like but sadly tis the truth, too many stupid people play
Stupid Name Biter List (updated):
-Primory (stupid name biter, maybe I should report this user for harrassment oh wait im not a posing e-girl like "southerngal" so guess no one would respond)
-TheBleuBaron (stupid name biter)
-bandcampgirls (with the "s" stupid name biter)
-en you tee zee's dozens of posers
-Tabarnak!!!'s dozens of posers
You'd think that could be considered harrassment, but I cheater'd that too was told it's not against the rules, seems like you have to be named southerngal and cyber with basement dwelling nerds on staff to get "harrassment" handled.
Stupid List (updated):
-w00table (never shuts the fuck up, ignore.txt)
-t0ma (ginger kid)
-skomes (trolling since 2006, also never shuts the fuck up ignore.txt)
-southerngal (stupid illiterate hussy who adaM thinks is a real girl so therefore has his back)
-Dr Phil's Charisma (stupid all around, can't stand people trying to use big words they find on dictionary.com then spelling them wrong when using them)
-En You Tee Zee (sick with crohn's disease in RL so hard to hate but still stupid and won't stfu)
-Skyn (racist)
-Democrat (racist)
-pee pee sock (stupid and racist, COMBO DEAL)
list is growing larger and may I add none of these people were "banned for pub chat harrassment" but spam/talk shit to new players and old daily, hmmmm INTERESTING
suck a dick adam with ur stupid post asking shit u alrdy know
Why does somebody who likes to talk shit cry so much?
He even comes to the forums to post screenshots and whine about mods.
Lol.
Next time he starts talking shit in pubchat I'm going to reference his thread whining about ph.
1. This might seem counter-intuitive, but if there was a way to sell the game, the people who buy it would take the time to learn what its all about. I mean, if you got this game on Steam or another online distributor, people would buy it. Sign a 6 month distribution deal.
The people that buy it will take the time to learn it, and some will naturally get addicted.
Sell it for about 6 months, then take it off the distributor and make it free again. The players that bought it will tell their friends to get it. And you're set.
Before doing this, it would be a good idea to implement any updates in the works.
2. Totally unrelated to the first idea: Take donations and use it to advertise on sites like SomethingAwful's non-profit ads: https://secure.somethingawful.com/fo...er_ad_internal or GameFAQs or whatever. Donations happened before to pay for bandwidth. I don't think its expensive to pay for ads.
Even better, the ads could link directly to a TW tutorial site and not a Continuum site.

They (Pure_Luck) are already taking donations for this purpose (see the "Donate" button on trenchwars.org) Two problems with this so far though:
1. They only mentioned it as far as I know on the forum, need to mention it in the news.txt, zone welcome message, and periodic zone messages to maximize the donations.
2. Even though it's been up for about 7 months and I heard they had 400+ dollars from it many months ago either nothing has been done with that money or we just haven't been informed.
