    I like the retro idea; it would be good to combine this with some kind of marketing to attract new players. Many existing and older players will not like this idea, they want pub to have many more bells and whistles. But IMO pub has lost some it is ability to attract and hold new players because of its complexity. This zone had traditionally been successful by supporting the ‘one-shot/one kill’ seduction. A new player can download the game and within a minute of two be able to shoot something and have it explode. This was ‘the hook’ but in recent years we have lost the ability to land the fish (retain the new players). This was partly (mostly?) due to pub becoming too complex and difficult.

    But the ‘dumbing down’ of pub is not going to be popular with some people, particularly those who don’t give a shit about new player retention. We will need to make sure that staff is prepared to entertain these players. Obviously it would be best if the ‘vets’ of the zone would occasional be willing to invest a bit of time in pub each week; not to show off their superior digital bulleting skills but to simply be good examples of how to base. (God forbid any one of them might actually help a new player.)

    But frankly there is a good chance that some ‘vets’ bitch about this change and then avoid pub completely during this time. Distension will probably grow but its limits will further frustrate players. But without ‘buy in’ from everyone, a decent plan for bringing in some new first blood, my fear is that this will fail. I truly hope it does not and that this opportunity is used properly to further understand how we can get the zone to grow.

      I don't really care what you do with lev at this point. As far as im concerned take the ship out completely and make Esc+4 spec people. As for population, im still convinced that TW would appeal to thousands of people who want a casual, chat-based, MMO. The barriers to that are its hard to adjust to learning how to play that mostly only retain people that have played for years. And also the fact that its incredibly hard to find TW or SS in the slews of free games advertised constantly. The old graphics are also issue but not as much as the other two issues.

      But as for the lev, I don't really care. Nobody I know lt's anymore. Its already gone, leave it dead.

        The Weasel and L3 levs will not help in least with noob retention....it thats the goal here.

        My apologies if I am mistaken on some of the ship settings, cause I wasn't playing back in 99.

          I haven't been able to test out the "classic lev" since bot wouldn't let me use lev, but the basic lev settings from that time period were:

          No rockets
          No portals
          No guns
          No repels

          Also, bombsafety was toggled on (not sure if it still is) so that lev's were helpless against anyone who got close and behind it.

            wb: same

            jav: almost the same, shrap count went up and down

            spider: same

            lev:
            4 Reps max
            1 Rockets max
            1 Portals max
            possible multifire
            L2 gun but L2 was one hit kill (was changed due to lancs getting too easy kills with it)
            L3 bomb (1 mine) with exactly the speed a wb bullet has
            speed and turn rate very slow

            terr:
            max of 3 turrets

            weasel:
            2x2 tiles
            L3 bullet with very slow speed
            1 Reps Max
            1 Rockets max
            Stealth + Cloak
            very slow but existing recharge while fully cloaked
            possible multifire with a spread pattern of about 2 degrees
            speed and turn rate about 1.2 times lev speed
            Slightly more Hitpoints than WB

            lanc:
            a little slower speed and turn rate
            L2 bullets that kill instantly (made it possible to just stray LTs from afar, but also created the name Lamecaster due to many spawners just firing randomly in spawn or down the mid tube, slower firing speed of course

            shark:
            pretty much the same, could be that it had xradar by default

            You also had to go to safe to buy things and used your score for it, pubbux with all the superweapons didn't exist (just type "?buy item" instead of a long pm to the bot in safe)

              The roof turret, the terr that you can buy in base and the buying of the flag should be removed. They were terrible ideas.

                I agree with all but the roofturret. Tha roof turret was more of a concession to lower population being unable to properly contain lt threats without completely negelcting the basing game. You can't devote 2 players out of 8 to hunt a lt down while fending off the other team in flagroom effectively at all. At least, that's how I see it.

                  How about disabling the roof turret when there are a certain amount of players (not counting those in spec)? Or allowing people to buy it only if there's an LT active?

                    But you can implement a cheat that kills two out of 8 players instantly because this will surely motivate them to play fair? Be realistic, in an 8 people pub usually nothing happens, no basing, no LTing, nothing organized at all except for the "let's keep stealing flag at 1s left"- or "ok nobody kills on killo, we will all get the cash"-deals. If people decide to do just anything legal you should be happy someone still plays the game and not doom them. A LT at least gives a prey to hunt for bored floaters. Still way better for the game than a shark blocking people from fr, a jav lagrocketing everyone, a wb, lanc or spid camping the spawn in mid positions or a bunch of weasels just cloaking everyone as it happens almost every day on low pop.

                          There is also a problem with private-freq players (Levs, Javs, Sharks, Weasel) timing their attacks from outside base right when the round starts. It is terribly frustrating to warp into he flag room to blown up a millisecond later by some random lamer camping outside base.

                            It's been months and nothing has been done about any of this.

                            If I didn't know better, I'd think staff was dysfunctional.
