It seems like the less TW needs alot of rules, the more TW keeps trying to rewrite and reimplement rules.

However, the problem isn't with rules. Because if there's a rule banning "offensive or discriminatory behavior", a BAD moderator will abuse or misinterpret that rule to their own ends. A GOOD moderator will enforce the rules and if he's a good moderator, the community will generally stand behind them. Bad moderation leads to threads like this.

The missing element here is trust, and TW staff severely lacks it. We can't trust TW staff to enforce rules in a manner consistent with the will of the public and higher authorities.
I do generally agree with that later half. One could argue the core of that issue is the heavy variety of people's personal upbringing, and how we each see things as decent/acceptable. Without some set of guideline to go by, the range of acceptable could vary by size, from Pebble to Boulder.

One could argue that, but I think a stronger argument might be the simple and sort of sad fact that there's just not that much a community left. In terms of Epinephrine's "History of TW", I started playing after the 'golden age' of 2001-3 (and had he continued writing, I'd argue 04-07 was THE golden age).

I learned what was acceptable and not acceptable from the community itself, the little nuances and the bigger rules. Moderators were people who had been around forever and were also aware of the sort of unwritten rules we had/have.

But as the community shrank, the pool of experienced players shrank, the quality/experience of the moderators shrank, etc. The current moderators, god bless them for trying, alot of them simply don't have the experience that spending years (and for some, decades) in TW will give. And so they have to sort of improvise and make calls that seem to backfire more than in the past.

This isn't a new problem. For me it all begins with SERTIFI. The dude spent zero time in the community and pretty much made it obvious he just wanted to be a staffmember. I remember coming back to TW after one of my many hiatuses and the dude was an ER, he might have even worked up to a mod. Not many people I knew took him too seriously because of that. On the flipside, you have cats like Wilby who came up legit, the guy learned the game and really is just an awesome dude. Oddly enough, noone ever complains about Wilby and if they do, they get told to shut the fuck up. I feel like you and I have talked about this in subspace recently, or at least something related. Veterans are getting harder to come by :P

          Stop making CP banners. Geez.
Can't have a swastika but we're all here to kill each other, lol.

Rule 4 has been deemed by me to be too subjective, vague, and broad. It is prone to inconsistency and abuse.

Well played Kthx. I didnt think that blatant porn references would lead us down the slippery slope to banning over a 12x8 banner that looks like a muffin as much as porn. Sometimes I like to give people a little credit

Also, Left_Eye actually banned me while I afked in pub overnight to drive my point home. I lol'd

i suppose a normal discussion between the player(s) and staff would've been alot easier. if i was azov i would've ignored it. if i was azov in another situation i would have tried to talk to this guy... example:

azov> ez, newbie, btw your banner is against tw current rules
                  noob> wtf no
azov anyway have fun, don't say you love hitler

                  etc

by the way the first time i ever played subspace, i used the name Wreckless MiG. used it for 2-3 years before I started using Jerome.

anyways recently i logged on to TW with the name Wreckless MiG and got asked by a mod to stop using the name because of "racism"

so uh, figure that one out. apparently russian aerospace technology is racist.

how did you not humiliate that staffer to everyone else on this game? maybe i just have no problems doing that type of thing, but god damn some people deserve it

everyone knows that the quality of staff is very poor compared to years ago

most of the staffers are a bunch of newbs who just got into the game

but whats the reason of this?

the older players 'vets' simply dont apply for staff

they dont have the time anymore, they just got enough time to compete with twl and complain on the forum

about how things can be better and how it was better back then,

but they dont have the time to make these changes

so trenchwars needs these new players (or new in staff positions)

who are willing to sacrifice their time and effort for the game

it will just take some years before they know the playerbase and how to handle these situations

The game will be dead in a few years.
