    • We were giving PriitK a reasonable amount of time to respond if he so chose to. We haven't heard anything from PriitK.

Physically packaging Continuum for Steam is very straight-forward and doesn't require source code or any special modifications.

However, the legal risk for the person(s) responsible for it's submission to Steam are unknown at this point.

            • So to summarize..you've hit a roadblock because you tried to put a game on Steam that you didn't have the rights to. And it's starting to look like Priitk doesn't even have any legal ownership of his Subspace clone. Continuum has blatant copyright infringement written all over it. I'm guessing he managed to avoid any kind of legal action up to now only because nobody gives a shit about an old pc game that doesn't generate any income.

I'd love to see Priitk prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

              • Worm: We are putting it on Steam. Just making sure asses are covered first. The submission process is done, Continuum has been tested and runs, and Steam doesn't care because they assume zero liability.

I'm a newb when it comes to steam. What happens when this game is made on steam? like can you play this game on steam website or something or it a steam client that runs this game or simply more people will download the game via a link?

                  • Steam basically just adds Continuum to their (universal) list of games, we'd be under "free to play". Steam users would click install and a slightly modified installer will install Continuum normally -- only difference is the users will be able to launch Continuum from their Steam 'console' (PC software, basically a games manager)..

I'm pretty sure Steam does care about the legality of the software they're distributing. That's probably why they encourage members to alert them to issues of copyright infringement and fraud.

Before you post your game or software to Steam Greenlight, you must agree to the following:
                            • You own the rights to sell the game or software you are posting, or you have specific authorization to represent the developer

Additionally, you agree not to post any item to Greenlight that contains the following:
                            • Someone else's game or software, unless you have specific authorization to do so
                            • Games or software using copyrighted material such as assets or intellectual property without permission from the owner

Abuse of Steam Greenlight will forfeit your Submission fee and result in a ban from Steam Community Services
I can't imagine what you were thinking when you agreed to this ^

                            • I'm almost sensing....anger?

No doubt they take legal matters seriously. They're a huge corporation. They're not just going to let Joe Shmoe package and submit Minecraft, link up his bank account and say "Yea, forward all payments to me now it's mine now pay me." ..

What kind of agreement do you think we signed, what do you think we're doing? You're sort of implying that I (personally) or that WE (as a community or just TW) are digging through the client, pulling out Priit's licenses and replacing them with our own - professing ourselves the owners.

What we're doing is not much more than posting a link to getcontinuum.com on a large gaming website.

                              • ...it isn't a problem

Most players are excited. Steam can (potentially) give Continuum a lot of persistent exposure..

Existing, retired and MIA players alike will pop their heads in just to see what's up.
While a steady flow of curious, new players will consistently log-in to sample the goods.

Consistency is an especially attractive quality, as it will almost guarantee multiple daily users browsing the games directory for something fun and free to play.

A steady flow of players is exactly what we need to not only stay alive but bring life back to Continuum..

In any case .... if either Steam or Priit decides to pull the plug -- they can. It's not like anyone is being defiant.
Sure, Trench Wars will be out $100 but that was worth the users lured into downloading from the Greenlight page.
(Not to mention the retired players that resurfaced just to see what was going on.)

If you think it's illegal, then the logical place to look is Continuum's own EULA:

                                1. GRANT OF LIMITED LICENCE. You, the end user, are hereby granted a limited licence to make use of this product for your personal enjoyment on any type or number of computers or game platforms to play on a game network. This LICENCE is transferable, and you may freely distribute this product as long as all files from the original distribution are included, unchanged and unmodified, including this LICENCE.
This means users may freely distribute Continuum on Steam's "gaming platform", as long as the client isn't modified -- and we do not have to modify the client..

Further yet, despite already knowing it's perfectly legal - we are still sending emails to Priit, still going over Steam's and Continuum's licenses,
we're still carrying out honest & open discourse with Steam's representatives - and still being open about our intentions so that anyone (Steam, Priit, Virgin, BDE) who might contest may do so now..

...and although we can comfortably assume after years of research, networking, investigating and campaigning, that this is perfectly legal and perfectly reasonable -- we're still making sure that nobody gets into any kind of trouble as a result of our actions.

I hope that clears the air for anyone who feels like there's a big mystery, or anyone who's feeling upset and assuming Continuum can never be on Steam.
Many players feel like the project is being deliberately kept secret but it's quite the opposite. There's just not much to say, as there's just not much to it.

Boasting Continuum on Steam is much like posting a link to Continuum's installer on a (very) popular mainstream gaming website/directory.

Nobody should be confused. I've said from the get-go that it's technologically and legally possible to package Continuum for Steam. I quoted Continuum's EULA a number of times and stated clearly that we're good-to-go on pretty much all fronts -- but it would be best to give Priit (and everyone/anyone else) a chance to speak up if there are any issues we overlooked.

We're waiting .. to A: give Priit a reasonable amount of time and to B: give ourselves time to triple (and quadruple) check the legalities to assure nobody gets in trouble.
The last thing I want to see is a volunteer developer of this community getting in trouble just by trying to help.

Enough said. We'll continue to openly discuss this......
