Again, if we had a history of data that we could fall back upon, we won’t be wasting time on this stuff now. Instead we continue to burn time, waste effort, stress staffers and turn them over more than McDonalds, stress development resources, and suffer from a horrid player retention rate. We have tried making ‘changes’ and allowing ‘improvements’ (mostly based upon input from players) to Pub for literally decades. And none if it documented, controlled, well tested, or other way to really be able to see if the changes worked or didn’t work.

What other than an ‘opinion fest’ would one expect from a situation like this? Years ago Moot worked towards making sure the Zone had mission stamen and objective to follow. The idea was that future zone leaders would actually use them as the vision and ensure the zone was on that path. Yet I have seen leaders since then actually follow this, and often make decisions that go counter to this important document (i.e whomever was responsible for allowing pub to become so one sided in favor of experienced players).

Read the mission stamen and show me how it is aligned with your opinion regarding TW being more dueling-centric, or in any way discusses anything about ‘blowing up stuff’. Now, if you want, you certainly can suggest changes to this document. Perhaps times have changed and diverse teamwork, competitive base play, and demonstrating all of the ship configurations is not a key aspect of TW Pub.

Yea I understand where you are coming from Eph, but there are factors beyond just when TW was retaining players. The whole ethos of gaming itself has changed in that time, like a social shift if you like. Best analogy I can give is think of football (soccer if American). 4-4-2 was the formation to go, but that is pretty much redundant now as things change over time and times adapt. A history of data may help, if nothing else would be beneficial, but would it still be relevant? You talk about Moot, I assume you mean Mootland Farmer, well I am looking long before he was even involved in staff taking back to Arilou and even prior BoB, TW was constantly adapting, it rarely kept the same formula until perhaps Moot came in and thereafter.

That in itself could be an issue as it meant things became stale, and when things go stale they become boring and repetitive. During the early times, public opinion wasn't really gauged and things were just set based on the opinion of the zone staff at the time. The idea was a balance between all ships that promoted not only flagging but also allowed for outside the base as well, LT's were particularly rampant during this period as was the warbirds hunting them and spiders with X-radar. While flagging (basing) was there, it was never pushed and yet players who enjoyed it, still did it.

Again I point out however, this is only my opinion as a player and in no way the views of staff in general. I am sure most will agree with you in terms of following that old document and have been doing for years, but I don't see where that has got us to be fair. I will also point out I have no idea if you started at the beginning of TW in 1997 so have any idea of how it was first setup or not, it maybe you have only experienced TW during those Mootland years so know nothing about the zone prior to that, but I will assume at this point that you were there so are discussing all Era's of TW?

or maybe tw hosted events that werent crap in its thousands of subarenas so the only choices tw had were more than pub or dead twd filled with dumb people and there were whole large groups of people that only came to tw for events

            THIS!!!!!

you people are fixated with TWD, i dont have the time to squadplay, i open TW and expect fun, i can play pub for 30 minutes, but mostly i wait for an event (which in the last years have become increasingly scarce) so now, i play 30 minutes of pub try elim (i like wb but mostly jav is played there so doh) and then leave for another mmo

i can grab any mmo steam game and have more fun than tw pub (the only real option 4 me)... why ya think steamers didnt stick

i suggested b4 going open steam, having more variety..... automated events (casual things for casual players (the majority)) no one has time to learn the game, improve skills, get in a squad and then wait for dds or whatever.... its 2015 people there are many options if you dont provide fun in 5 minutes people leave....
have you seen the steam stats where it says the median people played is 6 minutes, that really says somehing

I played through the Steam client and played in every active zone during the launch. This is my take on SubSpace in general, trying to look at it from a newbie's perspective.

They should've pre-configured and customized the Steam version of Continuum more than just adding [CHANGEME] in the name field and being in ?help and ?newbies
For one, the options and advanced options should've been carefully editted because the default options are bad. And this is what all Steam newbies played the game with: inferior settings of the game than what we are using.
A subtle change as disabling help ticker can have a dramatic impact in the long run.

I noticed that each zone had people helping out newbies.
So the "Help ticker" should've been disabled. The help ticker only applies to original SVS gameplay, not TW or anything else.

But since it was on, newbs got this when entering a zone:
              1. floods from the help ticker telling you to move with arrow keys and shoot with CTRL
              2. pm'd or helped by zone helpers telling them the same thing
              3. a zone's own tutorial (HS has a link to imgur, DSB has ?go tutorial and TW has !tutorial)
              4. while at the same time trying to fly and avoid getting killed

I could imagine the Steam players were overwhelmed. For one I believe TW should've adopted DSB's '?go tutorial' because that is the most detailed and in-depth tutorial in the entire game.
!tutorial is nothing. We don't need to make our own tutorial arena, it has already existed in DSB and we can just take that.

Secondly there was a lack of Steam guides untill it was too late (when the hype died down and newbs left, THAT'S when guides popped up).
Overall the transition for a newbie could've been alot better and smoother by having tweaked the Continuum Steam launcher a bit, alot of potential lost here. No second chance.

It was nice to see mods and veterans helping newbs out, but the help was too decentralized and chaotic, combined with the Continuum's default options, a recipe for disaster and ragequits.

Nah it clearly was just the lack of competition in pub and they left? They see the whole game as only being pub and didn't see any point to stay... This is why most new players leave but staff won't believe me.

If pub was better- they'd stay or come back... Simple as that. Bring on that a new client

Maggots! You should have hosted zombies 24/7. I use to solely come to trench wars zone to play zombies.....

Plus zombies games/shows and other zombie shit seem to be a fade in 2015.
