  • The Javelin (Dueling)

Hey everyone, it may sound useless but I had the idea to make a kind of tutorial for the ship i use the most, jav and shark, if someone would like to make threads for the warbird, spider, and terrier, it would be cool. I'm making this for people that would like to improve their ship skills and also for fun

First you have to understand that I am NOT the best dueling javelin but I have some experience in it, I will only post my tactics and the way I play to mostly 'try' to win

The javelin is a ship you must play patiently, the ultimate goal is to not make any errors while playing, since you're opponents will kill you when you make these errors (to my opinion). I repeat, be PATIENT. I use bullets, but not too much or else people will simply shoot a bomb in your ass and dodge your bullets. You must watch your energy, if you're low on energy, try to avoid getting in a fight with someone else, just fly around recharging your energy. If you get into a fight while you're low on energy, you have to choices, if your opponent is facing you with his nose (where the bombs are shot) try shooting some bullets and keep dodging, or else if he's shooting bullets at you, simply dodge, the best is to pass between 2 bullets. I've played this game for a bit less than three years now and the thing I noticed is that people that are good are feared, it may sound normal but try thinking: what if my opponent fears me? He will naturally be more hesitant to shoot at you and be more nervous while playing, which is bad. Like i said, when you're hunted by someone and you're 'dodging forward and backward randomly' like i said, he doesn't know where to shoot and shoots in the direction where you're trying make him believe you're going. Now, what if someone dodge like this while you're hunting him? Shoot right through him, don't shoot on sides where he's trying to make you believe he's going. The javelin is a ship where you have be brighter than you're opponent, predict what he will do and trap him in his own errors, even if you lost hope, never give-up, there is always a chance to win.

For you people that don't want to read this entirely: Try dodging the best as you can, find new ways to dodge, that's the best, you're own dodging style is THE best style. Be patient while playing, it may be long to kill you're opponent but you have less chances to die. Be feared by your opponent, predict what he will do and trap him in his own errors, oh, and try avoiding direct shot if you're new to this ship, try making the bomb bounce into a wall near you're opponent, you have less chances to receive a bullet in the face, and he will lose at least some energy if he doesn't die so he won't shoot back.

I'm only thinking of this for the moment, you can add stuff, comments, if you'd like, hope this is useful.

    Last minute thoughts:
-to be good in jav, play a lot of it, either in ?go javs or ?go baseelim, javs is good for twjd practice and baseelim is mostly for dodging and to reduce nervosity while playing.
-notice where your opponent is going and control your ship, do not let it fly around.
-when you shoot a bomb, don't watch it go and you'll GO BOOM!

P.S.: sorry about the english typing.

ehh I don't bother reading these kinds of posts thuroughly... I think the best method to learning a ship is to just practice in it and pay your dues.

Be creative with your shots but choose them wisely, know what your opponent is going to do before he does it, use butt bullets only when being chased, chasing or tricking your opponent into going one way then bombing him. If your opponent is low on energy you can chase using butt bullets, but stop chasing after a few seconds.

And yes the best way to learn is by playing in that ship, but for people that are new to the ship may get some ideas from posts like this.

I'm tempted to post my own how-to-be-a-l33t-jav thingie, but I lost everything I had because my laptop was stolen

            But, here's a quickie:

In all of my experience in jav, there are several skills that show themselves on every single level of play. Some obvious ones such as aiming/dodging, then a step deeper, seeing shots (both how many shots you see and how fast you see them), depth (how far ahead you can "read" your opponent) and overall mental speed. Most of you probably wont care or understand what I mean by all that, and I guess thats fine. If you're happy dodging bombs and bullets as they come up, be happy. But, theres a whole other world besides that.

Aiming and dodging are self explainatory. If you cant shoot the bomb where you want to shoot it, or if you cant control your ship enough to avoid a bomb/bullet that comes towards you, you wont become a better jav. I'm not really going to explain this stuff, but I'll give you a pointer. Aiming/dodging isn't about killing or avoiding the bomb (sorta), its about having control over your ship and bomb and bullets. Another thing is timing, but that fits into all this as a part of aiming.

Seeing shots. First of all, let me explain what a "shot" is. Imagine two javs with a wall (with some holes) between them. Now, lets say youre one of the javs. Fire a bomb, turn one click right/left. Wait until you have enough energy to shoot again, and shoot. Keep on doing this until you go around in a circle. Since you're imagining all this, dont worry about the kick-back when you shoot a bomb. Each bomb that you shot was a "shot". Most of them went into the middle of nowhere, so people dont think about those at all. The reason I'm introducing this idea like this is because in some situations, you'll want to see ALL the shots possible. This is how you do that.

Little side note about seeing shots. There is an incredibly huge amount of possible shots, but very very very few of them are worth looking at, and even fewer are actually taken. How fast/naturally you see the shots will matter greatly the better you become. Oh, and remember that shots go both ways. Remember to not only 'see' your own shots, but also the guy you're dueling...

Depth. It'll take too long to explain it. Imagine if SS had the same level of play as chess. In chess, you make moves in a certain way, try to predict what your opponent will do, and "read" things out and if everything works out as you want it to, you'll come out on top. Depth is a measure of how far you can read into the future. Apply the same basic theories of chess to SS, and you'll understand what I mean. Oh, and make sure you're perfectly clear on what cause->effect is... At a certain level it gets wierd... You get into situations where the effect is the cause and vice versa... (really hard to explain).

And finally, the kicker. Speed. Basically, how fast you think/react/shoot/dodge/etc. If your opponent is faster than you, he will win in the long run. He will just keep on increasing the tempo until you can't keep up mentally and start making mistakes, and then kill you. This is done by rushing/pushing. When you start running, thats a sign of weakness because you cant hold your own ground against your enemy because if you do, he'll just use his speed against you and beat you with it. You run to make up for the difference in speed. Speed isn't the only factor in all this, but since pretty much all of your skills grow together, its a combination of everything that makes a difference...

            Enjoy...
