    • Eph, I respectfully disagree. You've got a good grasp on how you want to act, but I totally disagree that you have to be a professional satirist/comedian to enjoy racially-charged jokes. That's equivalent to saying that you have to be a professional chef to enjoy diverse food. In my opinion, what you're experiencing is society's gag order that's made it impossible to say pretty much anything that isn't a bland re-warming. What bugs me is that we celebrate things like "diversity day" to explore the differences between people, yet we can't poke any sort of fun at these differences, no matter how funny they may be. We're losing our ability to laugh at ourselves--that's sad.

"Political correctness" has maybe solved some issues, but it's causing everyone to be afraid of every word that they say (even in their own homes), fearing (exactly like you have stated) that it will cost them their job, friendships, etc. The problem lies in the fact that people took the idea WAY too far. I'm a tall guy, and people often make jokes with me about ducking under doorways, "you big giraffe", "how's the weather up there?" (still happens, some people are hopeless dorks), etc. If I wanted to, I'm sure I could make a big stink about it and cause people to be reprimanded for it. I mean, I can't help the fact that I'm tall, right? They should know better. But I don't. Why, you ask? Because I can laugh about it, and I'm adult enough to realize that no ill will was intended. I think the differences between people is what makes life interesting. If we were cookie-cutter facsimilies of each other, everything would be boring as hell.

      To quote Paul Barman:
He'd never accuse someone of being PC because it's so frigging dumb to say.
The term arose on the Columbus Day Quincentennary when the republic was honest about the conquest and wouldn't party as previously promised.
If someone uses a non-offensive vocabulary, that person is considerate, not PC.
If someone has a heavy-handed agenda, that person is narrow-minded, not PC.
Unless you mean Providence College, PC is as meaningless as the president's apology for slavery.

There's a fine line between laughing at ourselves and laughing at others. Too many people don't know that difference.

                • every1 has the right to voice their opinion, and it's obvious no1 is going to change their beliefs, but i agree with Concrete. i think i've said this before somewhere...when some1 makes fun of u (and i've had my share of both tall jokes and white jokes), u have to show ppl it doesn't bother u. when they see that u'r not hurt by it, they'll either keep going until they lose their own self-confidence, or they'll stop right there. just accept the fact that people making fun of u for whatever reason is a part of life, and u can either take it as an insult, or laugh at yourself every once in a while and make the best of the situation.

I was referring not to the ideal, but more to the reality. I totally agree with you about how things should ideally be, but in our society things are not ideal. The reality of much of our PC society is that, if you robbed a bank and the cops profiled you as a suspect, they might have the arrest tossed during the trial. The same holds true in corporate America, the pendulum has currently swung far beyond the pragmatic, and I agree that it's sad.

I struggle with the American 'melting pot'. On a larger scale, I tend to support the idea of losing the delineation of race and having us all think of ourselves as simply 'humans'. On the other hand, I understand the value of keeping one's culture identity alive in the family. Is there a middle ground? Homogenizing everyone into a single group loses too much, supporting cultural differences tends to cause problems between the groups.

If you and I can figure this out, we will be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I think they still award $1M with it, so I guess we can then make sure that the TW servers are taken care of.

                    • Suprisingly enough (for the TW forums), I think we have ourselves an understanding.
