The reason I implemented the rule that all staffers must be on their staff name during TWL matches is really quite simple.

In the time between TWL seasons 4 and 5, Trench experienced a population boom. Increased number of players in a zone at any given time, increases the number of issues that may arise. Staffers were allowed to leave their staff name for TWL games, and were supposed to return once their game was completed. This created several problems, first and foremost was the issue of help and cheater call responses dropping to almost none during TWL games. Another issue was staffers going 'afk' after their match was completed and not returning to staff chat (I use the term 'afk' very loosely here, since most never were 'afk' just pretending to be so). Finally, there was the issue of staff not being available to host matches due to being conveniently 'afk' or claiming that they had a squad match at the time. If anyone remembers, Left_Eye, Acid, and some others hosted almost all of those TWL matches. Sometimes more than one at a time.

While considering this rule, we had many discussions on possible staff abuse during a TWL match. We created several rules and punishments for that as well. Every command that's issued by a staffer is logged, and can be easily retrieved if there was a question of abuse. As well as all TWBots were programmed to only receive commands from the scheduled host of a match. The only people who were able to override those commands were the TWL-Ops. We had absolutely no instances of staffer abuse during TWL matches last season under this rule. All instances that did occur (blueout violations were the only ones), were handled promptly and appropriately during season 6.

Enforcing the rule that staffers remain on their staff names during TWL matches, was and still is a great idea. Doing so ensures that issues and circumstances are being handled. Staffers are allowed though to leave staff chat during their squads TWL matches, so as to remove the oft distracting text of staff chat.

Cig said what I wanted to say about TWD matches.

Ünited Stätes Toughens Image With Umlauts WASHINGTON, DC—In a move designed to make the United States seem more "bad-assed and scary in a quasi-heavy-metal manner," Congress passed a bill Monday changing the nation's name to the Ünited Stätes of Ämerica. "Much like Mötley Crüe and Motörhead, the Ünited Stätes is not to be messed with," said Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK). An upcoming redesign of the Ämerican flag will feature the new name in burnished silver wrought in a jagged, gothic font and bolted to a black background. A new national anthem is also in the works, to be written by composer Glenn Danzig and tentatively titled "Howl Of The She-Demon."

                      I can't stop looking at incoming help/cheatercalls, during a D or L match I would never leave to do a call/host.
In my opinion you have the right not to do staffduties during a match your squad is competing in, even when you are in spec.
You are never going to stop people from pretending to be afk, I guess it would just be a matter of trust. And I guess it isn't hard to find out if a staffmember isn't doing his job properly.

Staff shouldn't be allowed to play in league matches or be members of squads.
I can't think of a competitive sport/hobby that allows the referees/judges to be on the teams.

I would think that simple 'conflict of interest' rules would apply here, perhaps allowing for a staffer to have a 'leave of absence' during the league season.

Staff members should always have the staff job as their highest priority and not have to deal with the distraction of squad conflict of interests. If staff wants to 'enjoy' the game, play pubs. If someone wants to be in a squad and play in leagues, then don't be on the staff. (This always has been the reason I never considered staff position.)

I disagree, many competitive sport/hobby have judges/referees are not paid or paid very little (examples are community softball leagues, local talent competitions, etc.) In fact, many times the referees/judges even in larger leagues/competitions are paid very nominal fees and hold 'real' jobs during the week.

My point is, there isn't a way to code around a conflict of interest.
