Does anyone know how to turn it off? I'm presuming you can because when I turn my speakers off I can't hear it anymore

I don't have dial up any more but it's something like this...

98: My Computer > Dial up networking > right click on your connection and there should be some type of sound tab.

Never had dial up on an xp machine, so...

It might also be a modem setting. Configure/change properties of the modem that you're using.

          Open "My Computer".
Open the "Dial Up Networking" folder.
Right click onto your "Xtra" icon and then select "Properties".
          Click the "Configure" button.
Click the "Connection" tab at the top of the page.
Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the page.
The "Extra Settings" box is at the bottom of this window. Click onto that box and type "m0" without quotes- that is m zero.
Click "OK" and "OK" and "OK".

You could join the rest of the world and get a decent connection?
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...
