Firefox question

Hey,
Just downloaded Firefox to use instead of IE. One thing has been pissing me off and I can't find the setting to change it. In IE when you go to a page and it has a box in the middle with a scroll bar, and the main page also has a scroll bar... if you go to the small box in the middle you can use your scroll button for just the box. Not the whole page. With Firefox it only scrolls the whole page. Just hoping someone here knows how to set that up.

I've also imported all IE settings, bookmarks, etc... to Firefox.

Mine has always worked they way you are asking for. Try clicking on the box first, then try the scroll wheel.

I prefer opera (www.opera.com), and I prefer <table blah blah> etc.. and php+mysql. Never use asp, so microsoft, though I haven't tried it out.. LAMP is the ulitmate tool/combo for a website, IMO.

Nothing wrong with ASP. It's a very powerfull server-side language, especially in a Microsoft server enviroment (IIS). I prefer JSP over most server-side languages, but that's just because I'm partial to Java in general.
Personally, I wouldn't use PHP, or MySQL if I had a choice in the matter.

All current popular browsers support IFrames:

IE > 3.0
Netscape > 4.0
All Gecko based browsers > 1.0
Opera > 5.0 (some bugs in left up to and including 6.0)

People who use browser that pre-date those versions, should just update.
I'm all for legacy support, but there are limits.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing cause clicking in it still doesn't allow me to scroll through it .

An example is at www.rshl.org, They have a main scroll bar for the site, then a smaller box for the recent forum topics and a scroll bar in there. I can't scroll in that small box, and clicking in it doesn't help.

i noted that a while ago, but it's not firefox, it's the code itself

that's the biggest problem these days - most sites are targeted for IE browsers, which don't coincide with W3C standards.

I would be just stupid to let mySQL out, since its such a good database, I presume there are others, but I like the extension with phpMyAdmin and mysql-front etc. It easy to make powerful website with PHP and mySQL, though have I only for a year done this, but I really like it. If you as k me IIS just sucks, not as powerful and steady as apache, I wouldn't want my websites be on IIS server.

Overall Microsoft sucks, it just a big monopol for the richest man in the world, it probably has the most bugs and the most viruses. Its like spreading plague among computer users, and the custumization is minor/mere for a normal user.

As like IE is draggin in some grade down the growth of internet, like eRad said, "most sites are targeted for IE browsers, which don't coincide with W3C standards.".

You can do nasty stuff with every language out there. Ever heard of global varibles in PHP? PHP itself isn't even object oriënted. There are third party implementations of OO-PHP, but those are still along way from perfect.
That's one of the reasons why I prefer JSP over ASP and PHP, because it's based on Java, which in turn is one of the strongest OO-languages out there.

As for MySQL, as a database it leaves ALOT to be desired. Only since version 4.1 (which is still a gamma/development release) does mysql offer support for subqueries, which is one of the most basic sql operations. It lacks a proper local GUI. I mean myPhpAdmin works fine up to a point, but if you really want to get down and dirty with the server itself, you're still condemned to use a commandline interface. The command center gui or any of the 3rd party gui's just don't cut it. Constraints can be implemented, but only if you use InnoDB type tables etc. etc. MySQL is a great open-source initiative, and it works fine as a back-end for small and medium sized websites, but as a database server it doesn't come close to rivaling Oracle for instance. Not a very realistic or fair comparison to make, I know, but if you look at it from a purely technological perspective MySQL isn't really all that "good".

About the whole Microsoft sucks fad:

- Their producs are quite simply among the best out there. Ofcourse, Microsoft has neglected to pay attention to alot of security issues in the past, which has come back to bite them squarly in the ass. On the other hand, microsoft products are a shining example of how man-machine interaction should be implemented, which is reflected buy their pupolarity among a wide variety of different countries/cultures around the entire world.

- The whole monopoly arguement you can throw out the window (no pun intended) right now. Nobody's twisting your arm to use MS' products, there are plenty alternatives out there, be it open-source or otherwise. Microsoft attained its current dominant position, because of the consumer buying their products.
