Toshibia and IBM are prolly the best bet in laptops, IBM was making the cases out of some kind of metal which is a good thing foor strenth. Toshibia makes an all around decent laptop as far as being a comptitive machine.

Where are you going to get the computer from? a big box store or....?

Maybe go in to one of those and get some opions, I had a friend that was looking for a laptop and he went to bestbuy, they recommended a Dell.
"Bilbo" SS is a sophisticated chat channel, nothing more.

My understanding is that IBM is a good product, however, it is overpriced due to it's leet brand name recognition. I however, have had no personal experience with the product. I'm just passing along what I've heard about them, so take it with a grain of salt.

Also, I've heard good things about HP, because of their purchase of Compaq didn't do so much for their company as they had hoped, they were trying to produce good products so they could make an expansion from the printer market into the PC market as well. I'm actually thinking about buying an HP or a VAIO, but I don't need a very powerful PC, since I just need it for school essays and notetaking, and general websurfing. No gaming, and just basic multimedia.

If you are getting a cheaper laptop, the brand doesn't matter that much. Most laptop are made by the same few companies.

Look for features, software, waurantees, and value. The name brand is the least of your worries. Only a few companies make their own laptops anymore.

that s true but the technical support is important, and that is bound to the brand

so if u buy IBM stuff u get good support
if u buy gericom u get no support

if u buy nameless u get no support or bad or good (but u dont know it exactly before)

Nope. The reserve price is set by the auction holder. If he sets the reserve at $100, that means if the winning bid is under $100, he can choose to cancel the deal. Kinda useful in case if the bidding doesn't go high, where the winner takes your computer for $3.

Alienware is a rip-off. Though they have very good tech support and are great machines, unless you want to show-off and brave the possibility of it getting stolen, then there is no point getting one. There is nothing specificiation wise that Alienware offer that any other company cannot compete with.

Basically you're just paying more because it looks flash.

I'm thinking about getting a laptop soon so I've been shopping around for a good bargain. Can someone take a look at this:
                    http://www.notebookoutlet.ca/Catalog...tm4002wlmi-xph
and tell me what they think?

Note: the features listed in the table are the options for the entire TM4000 series, the details listed at the top are the specific features for this particular model. As well, all funds are in Canadian dollars. What caught my eye about this model was that it has a DVD+/-RW at such a low price.

It seems strange to me that a college would suggest not getting a Mac. Considering you were saying that you were studying programming, and X comes with Xcode for free, with a project builder and command line compiling interfaces. The BSD core system, it seems pretty much tailor made for that kind of thing. Seems Odd. I guess the professors couldn't be arsed to teach in a way that isn't "read from this book, type exactly this into that kind of compiler".

Edit: And TK, my thought on that is you get what you pay for. I looked only a bit at that, but is it refurbished? A factory second? There must be some sort of reason why it's priced as it is.

The store is located in Pacific Mall, which carries certain implications for those who are familiar with it. Basically, it's an Asian themed mall with a penchant towards imported goods which may or may not be considered ethically for sale. There's even this one store that sells imported DVDs and stuff and it has these posters on the windows that look like pictures that Kim likes to post, but only if you knew what you were looking at would you realize that they are actually the covers of Japanese porn videos.
