  • Too much RAM?

Depending on your processor, is there a limit to how much your PC can utilize? Is there a ceiling that you will reach, when you just don't get any additional performance improvement?

I am running a 2yr old 1.2 Ghz AMD Athlon, and when I went to Frys, they had a sale on RAM. I bought 512Mb, because it was a good price. So I'm running 1.25GB of RAM on the 1.2 Gig processor.

What kinds of improvements would I notice with a faster processor? (like, faster boot process, faster AV scans, etc...)

What kinds of improvements would I notice with a lot of RAM? (like, faster boot process, faster AV scans, etc...)

Yes, I know I'm a newb. Thanks for the help.

Nobody loves me enough to answer my stupid question. Well, I'm gonna do a no-no and re-post this in general disc so someone actually reads it.

well, i'm digging into my past computer hardware class, but basically when the CPU writes data to RAM. More RAM means less swapping of data to and from the harddisk - which is a lot longer than writing and reading from the RAM.

With more ram you'll prolly notice a difference when you have several apps running at once.

windows xp can handle a maximum of 4GB of memory. If you do install 4Gb you need to change your boot.ini file apparently to make the most of it.....

i think the 64-bit edition can handel more but the 64-bit editon breaks lot of programs - i think including continumn

                As for your question....

Its probably cheaper to buy a new computer than upgrade :P

yep doc it does i cant run wow and continuum at the same time without it restarting the system although its only 3ghz with 1.2g of ram i dont know why it does this but it doesnt like alot running.
But from switching from intel to Amd i've noticed a huge difference in performance.

I used to have a Pentium 100Mhz i overclocked to 150Mhz runnning windows xp with 128Mb ram - soooo slow lol i only installed windows xp to see if it could be done $$

There's no such thing as having too much RAM.

However, the type of RAM that you have is unlikely to be compatible with your older processor... DDR ram and plain ole SDRAM look the same but the slots are different. It shouldn't even be able to fit into your computer.

I don't have any computers with less than a gig of RAM.

I hate to contridict Dock cus it means i might be wrong, but im fairly certain that a motherboard has a maximum amount of ram that it can utilize. If you put a stick in there that goes over your max, itll be ignored.

yea but the q was the maximum amount of ram for xp i believe so as long as the M/b Can support say 4gz then it will still work.
