  • ITT you recommend me a stable, cheep mobo

In addition to the budget gaming rig I'm building for me, I'm looking to build my dad a PC for xmas. But he doesn't need anything performance oriented like RAID or SLI. I think SATA and socket 939 is about as advanced as I am taking things. He just surfs the web and does a lot of word processing. AGP 8x/4x is cool---his video-end needs are very low. I don't mind paying a little more for something that will be bulletproof for a few years, when little is demanded of it. No OC'ing or anything.

Why go SATA and 64-bit for such low-end requirements? Well, my dad had the same rig for over 6 years before his wife upgraded 2 years ago. In fact, he's going to prolly keep this one for another 6, unless I have anything to do with it.

I want something that is going to be mad stable, since I'm his only tech-support, and will be required to make the housecalls/customer svc repairs.

Right now, I'm looking at this board. Decent reviews, and is inexpensive.

Ok, well I went ahead and just ordered this mobo from Newegg. Wish me luck on my first real build. Is there any advice you have for me that I should know? Again, this is not a performance oriented PC, it's just a word processor/net surfing tool that he will probably not upgrade from for at least 3-4 years.

    System Core:
    Mobo: Gigabyte K8U-939 socket
    CPU: AMD 64 (3200+Venice)
Vid: XFX MX4000 (Temp card for less than $30)
    HDD: WD 40Gb SATA 7200
PSU: 300w swap in from previous system, but I have a nice Thermaltake 480w that I can temporarily swap in, in case power-supply stability issues arise.

Well, it was a pain in the ass to remove my old mobo, since the case I am using for this build is a bit crap. I have an awesome LianLi 60A-plus case for the dream system I'm building in the next month or two, but the old steel box I'm using has none of the conveniences that LianLi includes.

But the install of the newb board was ez-breezy, and fired up on the first go. Minor BIOS adjustments and driver installs and I'm very pleased to have had no problems.

However, I'm writing this only about an hour after the complete install, so I haven't really had the opportunity to really put it through anything demanding.

Also, the LED's and cold cathode UV's were already in there from my previous system. I'm gonna remove them for my dad, since it's totally impractical for his needs.

Here's the final specs and a pic of the final results:

PSU: Thermaltake 480w (Will change later to a more practical power solution, since this system is not very demanding)
      Mobo: Gigabyte K8U (Uli chipset)
RAM: (512 DDR Corsair value select; 512 DDR OCZ value select)
      CPU: AMD 64; 3200+Venice
      Vid: XFX Geforce MX4000 (8x AGP; 64mb)
      HDD: Western Digital 40gb SATA
