PS2 reboots in black and white

I've been having a recurring problem with my Playstation2. Sometimes when I reset the console the system reboots only in black and white. I can't figure out why this is happening. My PS2 is not modded and all of my games are legitimate, and NTSC, as is my television. This problem doesn't always happen, but it is frequent enough to be annoying.

I couldn't find anything on Sony's tech support site. I've tried googling for the problem but I keep getting overloaded with hits referring to the game Black & White. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

like the game plays normally, but there are no colors?? i used to get that until i changed my av cables. it might be different with yours but use one of your friend's cables to see.

I don't think it's the cables because I can be playing fine and then reset the system because I want to play a different game or something. The problem disappears if I leave the machine off for a while, which leads me to think it may have something to do with the machine overheating, so letting it cool might fix it.
