  • Copy everything from SATA harddrive to SATARAID harddrives

Hey guys, I just helped my friend setup a RAID 0 using two SATA drives, and he wants to copy everything from his old SATA drive to the new SATARAID. The raid is made up of two 160gig drives, and his old sata drive is a 200gig drive.

He currently has winxp pro on the SATARAID drives, and winxp home on the other RAID drive. I was thinking norton Ghost, but I've never really tried transferring all data from one HD to another. XCopy and XCopy32 truncates filenames, and caused the sataraid to not boot up at all.

Is there a easy program or way to copy harddrives?

Also, if I have all 3 sata drives plugged in, the computer will always boot from the old SATA 200gig drive (xp home) as opposed to the SATARAID drives which have winxp pro. His old 200gig sata drive doesn't have the option to be switched to slave. How do I set the boot priority to the SATARAID drives after the data has been copied over?

Thanks for your help, all you comp wizs

He will have to rearrange the boot order in his BIOS. There is typically a short message that flashes just as you're starting up your computer, something along the lines of "Press F12 to enter setup". Delete and F5 are also common keys for entering setup. Have your friend restart his comp and watch for that message to flash. You need to react quickly, as it most likely won't show for more than 2 seconds or so. Each BIOS is different, so once you're in the setup take out the manual and find out how to change the boot order so that your RAID setup comes before the other HD.

Your WinXP Pro install should recognize the other HD as an additional NTFS drive, and will typically label it D, E, or F, depending on the number of CD/DVD drives you have installed. Moving files should be a simple matter of clicking and dragging the folders in question.

Right the bios was the first thing I tried - but now that I think about it I need to REMOVE the old SATA from the boot completely.

For some reason, his A8N-SLI mobo (which is the same as mine), puts the sata drives togeter to form the SATARAID (C after the bootup sequence and before windows starts.
