  • Disabling virus protection in BIOS

Okay, long story short: I need to partition my hard drive. I want to keep my OS and programs on a "main" partition, and move all my data to a separate partition.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to partition the HD, the BIOS' built-in virus protection detects my actions as a "virus attempting to write to the boot sector" or something along those lines, and denies access. I've rummaged around in the BIOS, and there is no option to disable this nuisance.

Short of going in and replacing hardware and things of that nature, is there anything I can do to get around this nonsense?

No, you cannot! I just learned this in school ^_^ there should be an option to disable it tho' can you say what bios you have? or post a screenie of your bios take a picture or something.. cuz you have different bioses but maybe if the virus alert is standard set to 'off' maybe you could reset your bios?... just a stupid idea.
help: (how do i shot) (Public 0): how do i travel diagonally? i only have up, down, left and right keys.

With HD's and NAS servers as cheap as they are now, why not just buy one for the data you want to move?

What program are you using to do partition?

I would recomend the Gparted livecd, i partitioned my NTFS formatted disk sucessfully with it.

As far as i know there is no bios virus protection that would "protect" the "boot sector" of a hard disk. boot sector viruses were common like 15 years ago but are non-existant nowdays this protection would be obselete.

Sounds like some kinda av software to me...

Okay, so apparently the BIOS wasn't to blame. I guess an A/V software uninstall I did some time ago didn't finish properly, because I fixed that problem and it works fine now. Thanks Doc.
