i use it to watch movies and whenever i play a dvd, the sound is always horrible. the dialogue and such is always extremely quiet when the background music and other sounds are always quite loud. it is basically impossible to hear any talking because it's so soft... any way that i can fix it?

do you have surround sound on?
this happens to my sound on the dvd player when i turn on the surround sound on the tv. My system is Denon but it has to be at least 10+ years old. you can always hear the background noises/sound effects but you can't hear the script. I think it's cause we don't have the center channel for voices. If there is any surround sound feature that's on while you are watching your movie, turn it off.

Try playing with the audio enhancements (view->enhancements).

Also, in Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Speaker Settings Advanced make sure it's the right speakers selected.

And sometimes DVDs let you setup the audio in the menu, use 2.0 for stereo.
