  • TV Tuner/Adapter

Does anyone have recommendations on a good tv tuner type adapter for a laptop? I'm searching around and am a bit confused over all the different formats and flavors these things come with.

First off, I cannot get a tv tuner card because I'm using a laptop. I'd like to be able to plug my tv connection into said tv tuner and into my laptop to watch basic tv channels and maybe cable channels (assuming am subscribing to comcast cable). I also hear you can pick up channels using built-in or external antennas that sometimes come with the tv tuner?

I looked at newegg.com and their reviews. I also checked out slingbox av (www.slingmedia.com) and avermedia's stuff (http://www.avermedia.com/avertv/Prod...st.aspx?IID=3).

I'm looking to spend maybe $100. And note, I am using my laptop as my tv and won't be using a real tv.

I've tried some USB tuners, most notably ATI's and a Hauppauge. I don't recommend the ATI tuner if you run Vista. I barely recommend it if you use XP for that matter.

The Hauppauge worked better and it's USB bus powered, but it gets really hot (both do, actually, maybe I just noticed it more with the Hauppauge). I found the Hauppauge's drivers and software worked better but I couldn't get it to run with Windows Media Centre on Vista.

Frankly, I found it a much better investment to get a cheap TV.

all i know is my flat mate had a newer cheaper usb tv adaptor thingy

i have a PCI card (hauppauge hvr 1100) which cost probably 2x-3x as much (though my card does offer both analogue and digital which i needed when i bought it)

we bought a spliter and it came with crap cable, with that mine was unwatchable as was his. So we went and bought good quality cable.

Now with the exact same feed his is unwatchable breaking up often, yet mine is fine. The T.V. in the living room also is fine but it's a shorter run. He was last talking about buying a card instead, as it looks like it is his cheap usb one not being up to scratch.

If you check out reviews you hopefully this won't be an issue or if you know you will have really good signal strength, but there are some cheap ones that don't have much tolerance.

The software that came with mine has been updated but its still quite horrible, thats another thing to consider - or perhaps i should look into 3rd party software again? last time i did that it didn't work as i was using analog signal but now i've a digital feed hmmm

You could try a cable booster/splitter... We have two in our house one upstairs and one in the basement where it comes in, because there's 4 TV's downstairs and 4 TV's upstairs (as well as Cable modem to 4 desktops and wireless), and it works great. The picture quality was grainy and staticy for all the TV's upstairs until we got one of these... Perhaps you should try that

          cheers

          it is a 4-way booster/splitter we are using for 3 t.v.s
mine and the normal tv work fine but his usb one doesn't, think he tried it without the splitter and it still didn't seem to have enough strength
