Unless someone watches a person play over a period of several games and has complete information as to what is being asked of the that person during game play, chances are that they can not accurately produce a valid understanding of the contributions that are being provided. A spider might be assigned to fullfill a particular role in a game. That roll might be to take up a camping position, or be an aggresive spider who targets the opposing terrier of WB in the lower base. If someone is assigned to be a spider that targets the opposing terrier, his final game record is less than break even, but he killed the enemy terrier 3 times during the game, will most people see that as being a good game for that player? No, even though he was the consummate team player and contributed exactly what was asked of him. Additionally, I've seen good spiders throw themselves in front of enemy fire/shrap 4-5 times per game to save their own terrier, this kind of team play doesn't show up in the statistics.
So unless you watched closely and unless you know exactly what is being asked of the player before the game starts, you are forming an opinion without critical understanding of that player's role for that game. (This is also why, in my opinion, the awarding of a MVP in ?Base is so meaningless.) There is far more to being a 'good' player than a high score in ANY team game/sport. There are many other variables to be considered, (and variables like a player trying to do what the captain has asked him to do) that need to be be considered in a well-informed opinion.
On the topic of "sacking yourself for the terr", unless your team is getting hammered in to corners (in which case you're fucked anyway), there's very few times when you'll really be saving the terr by getting yourself killed. Trust me, if the terr wants one of his little meat shields to block for him, he'll do the moving, not you.

Bursts, jav bombs, and wb bullets normally all need to be blocked if they are coming toward the terr. Almost never the red bullets though.
