Has anybody else noticed a lack of competition in Trench Wars as of late? As in, the good players just aren't around, and the up-and-comers aren't as up-and-coming as they once were - take after TWL season 6.
Sure, there are a few exceptions, but in an overall sense, this is true.
Because of the fact that school has started for the year, summer vacation is over, that World of Warcraft game is here, or whatever else, people are far more occupied than they would be during the summer.
As of right now, and no offence to anybody at all, there is probably a maximum of three competative squads in each of the three leagues with no real reason to think things will change.
For some reason, people preached that during the summer, not enough people are able to play TWL. Citing reasons such as good weather and vacation, the people against summer leagues seemed to be alot louder than the people for common sense.
I admit, people do go out for a vacation during the summer. Further, a lot of people would rather spend their time in the nice weather outside rather than staring at a monitor.
However, to dispute this being a reason to change the TWL schedule - I really do not think that any large proportion of the TWL community is going out on vacation at the exact same time. Further, missing a player for a week or two isn't normally going to be that big of a deal in terms of how your squad's season will turn out. I don't think that vacations played a huge part in how TWL Season 7 turned out.
Oh, and by the way; over the entirity of summer, the weather is nice. If a guy isn't going to be able to take an hour or two out of a Sunday afternoon, then he probably isn't going to make it at all, no matter when the season is. I enjoyed the weather as well, but hey, Monday-Friday were nice as well.
Now let's move on to what the new schedule will look like. First of all, a bunch of people are living in University dorms - I've done this before. Now, I don't think that I would be the only one to say that when i was in a dorm, the internet was pretty much unusable in terms of online games. For whatever reason, you will have a 2000 ping or 20% packetloss or whatnot. It is inevitable that one will lose interest in a game if they are unable to play!
So, take all the people living in University dorms out of the equation, for the entire school year (not just a week or two AND all at the same time).
Okay next, for people in high school. You go to school 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, the weekend hits, it is your chance to actually do something with your friends. Would you rather spend the 2 days that you get off hanging out with buddies, or have obligations in terms of subspace?
Oh, but wait - there's more. I am sure that most of you play a sport. Further, I am sure that your sports are mostly scheduled on the weekend (I know soccer was). Even further, for North America at least, the hours of your sport will probably conflict with TWL hours. If you are playing the sport to begin with, then it WILL be your priority.
Okay, so now, take out the people in University dorms, take out the people playing sports, and take out the people who want to spend their 2 days off doing something other than Subspace (I'm sure they exist).
Who's left? It doesn't really matter, but it is sure to be a far smaller percentage than we would see during the summer. The population statistics speak for themselves - I haven't seen 700 people online in a while. . . Since summer in fact. Now, just by proportion, with a smaller player pool to draw from, the overall skill level will inevitably decline. There will still be those top squads with the top players all grouped together, but there will be fewer of them - and a far larger gap between the top and the bottom.
Now, that said, I will most likely play TWL whenever it is scheduled (working year round means the seasons don't affect you very much). However, I would prefer to see more competition over the course of the season rather than 8 weeks of games that the outcome is never in doubt - we had enough of those in the summer.
Note to TWL ops: This is not a post encouraging lowering the number of teams that qualify for TWL, the more the merrier for me, I would like to play as many games as possible and, thus, have each one count for less in the grand scheme of things. This post is just a prediction. . . And maybe a plea to hold out on the next TWL? I know it would suck to wait even longer, but I also think that it would suck to look back and say "WOW, THAT SEASON SUCKED".
PS. I think it is ironic that the Pallies were the most adamant enforcers of a Winter league and that, last i checked, their top players had left or were inactive, and that they were openly recruiting people on the forums. No offence, yer all cool, but you guys didn't think that one through eh?
PPS. Maybe the biggest reason the season will suck: Where is THE PUSHER???
