  • 1440x1080 makes sense, 1440x1024 doesn't

    Got a new monitor yesterday (an LG W2343T, 16:9) and after I installed it I fired up Continuum. Changed resolution to 1920x1080 and started playing in Trenchwars. Wow, what a view! Better than sunset in the Rocky Mountains on a nice day.

    Then a ?go twbd. Eeks! Server responded with 'Maximum allowed screen resolution is 1440x1024 in this arena'. Changed resolution to 1280x1024, and set the monitor in 4:3 mode.

    Now I have two problems with 1280x1024:
    1. Pixels aren't square, even in 4:3 mode. In 4:3 mode pixels are square when the resolution is 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, 1600x1200 etc. In 1280x1024 pixels are more like bricks which makes shooting (among other things) a lot more complicated. Playing in 1280x1024 and you don't see it? Just measure the physical size of your radar. It's not square.
    2. It looks like I'm looking through dirty glasses: smeared pixels all over (1280 horizontal pixels stretched to 1440 and 1024 vertical pixels streched to 1080). I want a one pixel to be one pixel!

    I addressed the first issue by creating a custom resolution, 1362x1024. Pixels are square again (as is the radar), and ?go twbd works.

    However, I can't solve the second issue. I would be very happy with a resolution of 1440x1080 (in 4:3 mode). Pixels would be square and no smearing. But the maximum vertical resolution is 1024.

    The 1440x1024 resolution on itself is ridiculous (it's something between 4:3 and 16:10) and absolutely unplayable. It's probably intended to cap 4:3 (1280x1024) and 16:10 (1440x900) resolutions.

    My request: would it be possible to add a mere 56 vertical pixels, so we could play in 1440x1080. I'm sure users of cheaper 16:10 screens also would love this, since they can then play in 1400x1050 (4:3 mode, no smearing).

        If you put your desktop resolution to 1920x1080 and select 1280x1024 and windowed mode, your actual resolution will be 1280x1016 and you'll be able to play without anything being stretched. Or just use 1280x960 fullscreen.

            I don't like windowed:
            -you can see Windows (desktop with icons, a taskbar, ...);
            -can't scroll text;
            -can't click links;
            -windows position isn't saved when retuning to the main menu;
            -there's a window border, which interferes with the game (e.g. a subtle energy bar).

            But on the upside: a pixel is a pixel...

            56 more vertical pixels would be so nice.

              good for multitasking?! i always do that when playing, if i had to 100% focus on this game i'd kill someone. :fear:

              -can't scroll text;
              you can if you change the options (in zone selection screen -- think it's "View => Options => Chat" and there "Show always" too lazy to double check tho!

              -can't click links;
              read above

              -windows position isn't saved when retuning to the main menu;
              it does for me.. odd! :turned:

              -there's a window border, which interferes with the game (e.g. a subtle energy bar).
              lielielielie!

                Didn't know you could have a chat window in Windowed mode, ty. I like the chat, I usually park it on my secondary display when not playing.

                  What does it matter if the pixels aren't square? TWDD arenas aren't square either.
                  No matter what the resolution, just get used to it.

                        I vote to get out of the 1990s and allow all resolutions! To be "fair" is BS. Go buy a new monitor and get rid of your CRT.

                          It's limited to 1440x1024 because the server will not allow you to set exact specific resolution limits, only allow you to set X/Y limits, so in order to support both 1440x900 and 1280x1024 the limit must be 1440x1024. No one actually expects you to play at that resolution, but it is allowed because of how the server works.

                          If you play on a 1920x1200 desktop you have no choice but to play in windowed mode. Playing in fullscreen at any non-native resolution looks horrible so the only solution is to make 1920x1200 the res limit. Even if 1440x1080 was allowed as you're requesting it would still look horrible on full screen mode.

                          (I have no idea why 1440x900 was decided as a res limit, because who the hell uses that as a desktop resolution?)

                            1920x1200 users aren't helped by raising the vertical resolution to 1080 pixels, just as 2048x1152 and 2560x1600 users aren't.

                            But the majority of monitors produced nowadays have 1680x1050 or 1920x1080 resolutions (see the table below). Users of those monitors benefit from raising the vertical resolution to 1080. 1680x1050 users can play in 1400x1050 (4:3) and 1920x1080 can play in 1440x1080 (4:3).

                            Code:
                            Resolution Size Aspect Ratio Monitors offered*
                            1280x1024  17-19"   4:3            159
                            1440x900   19"      16:10          61
                            1600x900   20"      16:9           20
                            1680x1050  20-22"   16:10          124
                            1920x1080  22-24"   16:9           178
                            1920x1200  22-24"   16:10          83
                            2048x1152  23"      16:9           4
                            2560x1600  30"      16:10          10

                            I'm now playing in 1440x1024 windowed, but I really would like to go back to fullscreen (1440x1080 in 4:3 ratio).

                              What's wrong with playing in 1280x960 in fullscreen?
