Fierce vs. Potenza

Round 1

After an epic, three round Winner's Semi-Final between Fierce and Burn where every match was decided by single-digit margins, many expected a similar series against Potenza, as they had gone 7-0 during the regular season.

Instead, Fierce proved what many of us suspected all along, that they were paper champions of the regular season who won meaningless games over Burn and Fierce during replay week with most of their starters not showing, and couldn't even put up 25 kills, in one of the most lopsided, embarrassing rounds in TWLD history.

Lasenza (14-5) led all warbirds, crushing Potenza with aplomb, as DEEZ NUTS almost aced them with a 10-1, ahead of Apok (10-6), Skepsis (8-7), and Vash (8-5).

All of Potenza negged, as Okyo (8-10), Iron Survivor (7-10), Cres (5-10), Served (4-10), and Forces (0-10) performed various keyboard presses that technically qualifies as "warbirding".

Don't worry guys, practice makes perfect!

Fierce vs. Potenza
50-36
Round 2

Potenza managed to get a whole 1 person to go positive in round two, and it only took razing 500 miles of critically endangered Brazilian rain forest to get it to us, as Iron Survivor went a whole +1 (!!!), notching an out-of-this-world 11-10, ahead of Okyo (9-10), Cres (8-10), Spezza (4-10), Served (1-6), and Shaun (3-4). Tanzu, meanwhile, continued his impressive lifetime streak of ducking Fierce in TWLD. Tanzu and Rule should form a squad next year, and call it ISIS (Insane Shit-talking In Spec).

Ship 9 warriors aside, Fierce put in a sublime performance, coalescing a balanced attack around DEEZ NUTS (11-5), Lasenza (11-8), Vash (10-7), Skepsis (10-9), and Apok (8-7).

Congrats to Fierce on advancing to the TWLD Finals for the fifth year in a row!

Burn vs. Dudgeon

Round 1

Best went ham this game, notching an impressive 17-10 to lead Ogron (9-6), Ease (9-8), Mythril (6-8), and Zidane (9-10) to the 50-42 win.

megaman89 made his presence felt with a superb 15-10, with good play from Zizzo (10-10) and dreamwin (8-10), but poor play from Stayon (6-10) and especially JAMAL (3-10) prevented this from becoming a potential upset.

Burn vs. Dudgeon

Round 2

Ease (13-2) and Best (15-10) took over Round 2 late, after being down in the mid-game, ahead of Mythril (10-10) and Tiny (6-10), and Zidane (2-5), with a late sub-in from Ogron (4-4).

dreamwin (15-10) and Zizzo (11-10) continued their strong showings in warbird, with some great scores, but once again a series of uneven performances let them down, as Stayon (6-10), JAMAL (5-10), and megaman89 (4-10) failed to reach parity.

Nevertheless, Dudgeon acquitted themselves nicely in TWLD, with a pair of 50-40 results against Burn and knocking out Vikings in three thrilling rounds last weekend, despite not being WBs. Kudos!

Zizzo (Dudgeon)

Zizzo finished fourth in TWLD in kills, quietly putting together a fantastic season, notching an impressive 128-121 record over 13 games, including 15-9, 13-8 performances to take out Vikings in the Quarter-Finals, and 10-10, 11-10 against championship contenders Burn. Nice work!

Loser's Quarter-Final


Cobra vs. LEGO
50-28
Round 1

Last year's TWLD Finalists showed no mercy to a hapless basing squad masquerading as a multi-league institution (despite Turban's best efforts), as Cobra won by an astounding 22 kills. Yikes!

Absent (11-1) and Rasaq (12-7) led Casket (11-9), Ricko (8-5), and skatarius (7-6) to the W.

For the Legonians, Turban (11-10) put up the only positive score for them across both rounds, ahead of joemama (8-10), Flew (5-10), ROWS (3-10), TJ Hazuki (1-4), and Henry Saari (0-6).

HOT: Absent
NOT: Whoever subbed Henry Saari (0-6) out, preventing his entry into the elite ranks of the 0-10 Club with Mark Stone.

Said '0-10 Club' President, 24: "We're very disappointed in LEGO's leadership, as we looked forward to the addition of Henry Salami to our membership rolls. While it's no -1-10, his 0-6 was certainly the sort of performance we're looking for. Mark Stone, a.k.a. Forces, has already benefitted tremendously from his association with us, as we provide excellent references."

Cobra vs. LEGO

Round 2

Ricko (14-7), Casket (13-4), Absent (8-8), Rasaq (10-10), and skatarius (5-3) didn't let their foot off the gas, as round two proved to be more of the same, as Cobra took care of business.

Flew (9-10) and Turban (8-10) proved too little, too late, as passable scores from Rows (7-10) and TJ Hazuki (7-10) couldn't buoy one of the worst TWLD captains of all-time in Joemama (1-10), who avoided joining 24 and Mark Stone by a single kill. Awful.

With that, Cobra will lock horns with Burn in the Loser's Semi-Final next sunday, whereupon the winner will take on Potenza in the Loser's Bracket Final for a chance to reach the Championship Finals on November 22nd.

HOT: Ricko
NOT: Joemama (1-10). LEGO's TWLD nightmare captaincy finally is over, as the laggy (C) who started himself in every game despite one of the worst records in history (61-98) is eliminated from contention.

Joemama is a lot like the Chinese navy -- 200 Pings and in dire need of a sub.

Turban (LEGO)

Turban finished third in kills in TWLD, with a 129-120 record and playing every game for the undermanned and poorly helmed LEGO squad, who, along with Flew (Runner-up to this award with a respectable 107-115 record, including a 17-7 vs. Dudgeon in Week 3) willed LEGO past Paladen in a Round 3, 50-48 win last weekend to keep their season alive and played all 13 games. Stalwart effort!

kess (12-7), Ease (12-8), Tiny (11-9), Zidane (8-8), and Best (6-10) took Round 1 of the Winner's Final by 8, as both of the heavily favored TWLJ teams vied for a spot in the Championship Finals.

For Dudgeon, Rough (11-10), Stayon (10-10), and Commodo (9-10) played well, but were let down by megaman89 (6-10), dreamwin (2-6), and Zizzo (2-4).

Round 2

The second round was extremely close, with Burn winning by the narrowest of margins, as megaman89 (14-10) had a big game leading Dudgeon, as both he and dreamwin (10-10) stormed back from their sub-standard Round 1 efforts, but the three best players from the first game didn't follow it up this one, as Stayon (6-10), Commodo (6-10), and Rough (4-10) fell short.

Zidane (13-9) led Burn in clinching the match, ahead of Tiny (11-10), Best (9-8), Ease (7-8), and kess (7-10).

Burn moves on the Championship Finals, while Dudgeon falls to the Loser's Bracket Finals, where they will be the odds-on favorite to secure a rematch for the title.

NOT: Rough, who got cut up for a 4-10. I know you love playing on a joystick, but given the amount of blood and excuses pouring out of you every time you lose, it might be time to trade in that gamepad for a maxipad.

Juans vs. Cobra

Round 1

Tom Juan (12-5), Lorko (10-5), Steadman (10-9), Healt (8-4), and John Juan (6-8) led Juans to a decisive Round 1 victory.

On the losing side, Kim, Shadowmere, Trasher, vys, and Wax all negged, with only vys approaching parity with a 9-10.

NOT: Shadowmere (3-10). I had a really good Gandalf joke, only to realize that was Shadowfax, not Shadowmere. FML. You get a free pass this one.

Round 2

Trasher (12-9), Kim (11-8), Shadowmere (11-10), Wax (7-10), and vys (6-10) managed to eek out the tightest of victories in his hotly contested Round 2. Wowza!

Tom Juan (14-10) and healt (13-10) once again showed up big, with a solid outing from Steadman (9-10), but a pair of 4-10s from John Juan and Lorko forced a Round 3.

Juans vs. Cobra

Round 3

In an excellent Round 3, with both teams fighting for their lives, Juans edged Cobra out 50-46 as only Healt (13-8) and Tom Juan (11-8) were left standing, leading John Juan (13-10), Tom Juan (11-8), Lorko (6-10), and Steadman (6-10) to the W.

For Cobra, vys (12-10) and Trasher (11-10) played well, but negative nacies Wax (7-10), Shadowmere (7-10), and Kim (5-10) put the nail in their coffin.

NOT: Kim (5-10).

HONORING THE FALLEN
Trasher (Cobra)

Neymar and Zazerick had the best regular seasons for Cobra, but neither showed when it mattered in a must-win game vs. Juans to keep their season alive, so it came down to Trasher (81-87), Shadowmere (97-108), and Wax (91-96). Shadow was on the verge of breaking out as a superstar jav last year, so this season is quite the regression, Wax is a longtime veteran jav and was solid but not spectacular, while Trasher is primarily a baser, yet contributed all season, then performed in the clutch, leading his squad with a 12-9 in their Round 2 win, and a stalwart 11-10 in their Round 3 loss, narrowly losing to a talented Juans squad, making him my choice as Cobra's standout player in TWLJ. He was their best jav when it mattered the most. Congrats!

Evildeed (15-10) led all javelins, as revered (13-8), LAST STANDING (8-2), Apricot (9-6), and 24 (4-6) knocked Potenza's teeth out in Round 1.

On the not-so-winning side, shaun (9-10), okyo (7-10), Mark St0-10ne (5-10), iron survivor (4-10), and field (4-10) all negged.

Round 2

God-king Okyo kept Potenza's season alive, putting up a monster 16-10 performance, ahead of Iron Survivor (10-10), Cres (8-10), Mark Stone (8-6), and Shaun (7-10).

Fierce saw solid, balanced outings from LAST STANDING (11-10), revered (10-10), apricot (10-10), and 24 (10-10), but EvilDeed (4-10) shit the bed and cost them the round.

Fierce vs. Potenza

Round 3

Fierce put Potenza out of their misery, as the better team finally flexed their muscle, with revered (16-7) going completely fucking ham, as the veteran javelin took this game by the throat and never let go (much like a first date with Greg Hardy), with sizzling performances from Evildeed (12-7) and Last Standing (12-8), with Apricot (5-6) and strong sub-in Apok (3-0) in tow, and one of the most atrocious outings in TWLJ history, as 24 went 1-7 in a 50-35 win!!

After his 6-10 and 5-10 performances in the first leg of the playoffs (both the worst scores on his team and earning two NOTs), and with his 4-6 in Round 1 and his 1-7 in Round 3, he has had the lowest score in 4 of 5 games for Fierce in these 2015 playoffs, despite having the 7th most games played in TWJD amongst all javelins. Just wow...

I hope Fierce doesn't waste a round this Sunday figuring out they need Apok starting against Dudgeon -- play him immediately!!! He's a clutch playoff performer, which they're in desperate need of (they have plenty of javing talent.)

Iron Survivor, Cres, Mark Stone, Okyo, and Shaun all negged, as Potenza was eliminated from TWLJ.

HOT: revered
NOT: 24 (1-7). If this were the zombie apocalypse, and we all got into a car to escape a horde of zombies, we'd all die because you don't know how to drive clutch. You have a 13-7 average against Potenza in TWJD. You need to swallow an entire bottle of Xanax before every match.

Okyo was a complete monster for Potenza in TWLJ this season, finishing 5th in the league in kills with 123, including a Herculean 16-10 this week, and 12-10 and 11-10s last week to knock LEGO out of contention, continuing his dominance in both warbird and javelin. Kudos!

Loser's Quarter-Final


Cobra vs. Vikings
20:00-15:42

Vikings really impressed this season, upsetting Fierce during the regular season, winning a playoff game, and taking 16 minutes off a veteran Cobra squad, as the heavily-favored Cobramin clinched the W in a fun match.

Trasher (43-5) and Pressure (29-3) terred ahead of menelvagor (2.5 RPD again???) and Wax (2.8 RPD) in shark, with voth (128-76), Ricko (123-71), skatarius (123-78), and squallFF8 (114-62) in spider.

warportal (57-14) terred ahead of Ephemeral (2.9 RPD) and Valker (2.8 RPD), with Steep leading the way with a 125-86 in ship 3, ahead of Cloth (117-80), TheWadoRooster (110-89), Gurliver (107-78), and Banks (88-71).

A great season from the Vikings despite being eliminated, with solid and consistent sharking every week from Eph and Valker, solid, pushy spidering from Steep, Gurliver, and Enf, and good terring from warportal -- they formed a competent nucleus despite lacking starpower or a plethora of Vikings, and were a nice addition to TWLB. Extremely hard to single out an Honoring The Fallen candidate, I'll likely pick two, since 5 or 6 of them were deserving of the award.

On the winning side of the coin, Cobra won its second must-win playoff game in a row, and will need to win two more to reach the Championship Finals, as they take on LEGO in the Loser's Bracket Semi-Final, where they'll vie to cross sabres with Dudgeon in the Loser's Bracket Final.

NOT: I'm not sure what's going on with menelvagor. I know RPD isn't everything, but holy shit, 2.5 RPD two weeks in a row vs. opponents you should be beating? You're two repping on 50% of your attaches... I haven't seen terriers get this little protection since Michael Vick owned a dog-fighting pit.

HONORING THE FALLEN
Steep (Vikings)

Steep was Vikings best spider this season, finishing 16th out of over 100 in kills, with a 468-273 record and 104 kills per game, including a team-high 125-86 against Cobra in the second round of the playoffs. He was a veteran presence on Vikings all season, and was a big part of their success. Kudos!

HONORING THE FALLEN
warportal (Vikings)

warportal anchored the Vikings line in the toughest ship to play and under the most scrutiny, showing to 100% of matches and keeping many of them competitive despite being out-gunned. He posted a 37-7 in their upset against Fierce, leading them to a 15-12 victory despite his spiders being outkilled by 50 (often the mark of a great terring performance.) He wasn't flashy and he wasn't perfect, but without him Vikings success wouldn't have been possible. Vikings clearly agreed, as more than one lobbied me for him to get this award. Nice work!

Winner's Final


Burn vs. Dudgeon
20:00-14:18

This was one of the more anticipated matches of the week, as the two basing giants faced off in the playoffs for the first time since Dudgeon won an epic 3-2 thriller over them in the TWLB 19 Finals. Burn took full advantage of an early Mikkiz lagout and never looked back, taking a (I believe) 19-8 lead, before Dudgeon mounted an excellent comeback, with a recalcitrant cram that held the former Thunder players at bay, before Burn finally crashed through and clinched the game.

Zizzo (42-10) took on terring duties ahead of porkjet (2.7 RPD) and Commodo (3.0 RPD), with dreamwin (123-88), Stayon (120-73), JAMAL (116-82), megaman89 (114-69), and mcvicar (100-81) in spider.

For Burn, Ogron (35-5) terred in front of Mattey (3.0 RPD) and Zidane (2.9 RPD), with Kess (137-76) having a monster game under, alongside Ease (137-71), hellkite (128-58), hulk (106-81), and M_M God (115-80), who had an impressive 5 teks!

Look for this game to have little bearing on the Finals, as Dudgeon will likely bludgeon either LEGO or Cobra to death next Sunday, then take on Burn once again in the TWLB Finals on November 22nd.

NOT: Mikkiz's lag (although I thought Zizzo played well, as evidenced by his 42-1 in terr last week, and his 44-4 average this year, 3rd best in the league.)

Loser's Quarter-Final


LEGO vs. Fierce
20:00-13:28

In what has been a disappointing season rife with absences from key players, Fierce fell to a less-than-imposing LEGO line absent of Vatican Assassin, Zizu, and Spikey. Last year as Royal, they set the ship right come playoff time, taking out a very-tough Enemy line and nearly eliminating Dudgeon, but this year they failed coalesce come crunch time. They looked really good against Burn last week, showing a full line, and looking like a legitimate contender, but with Cripple and wbm persona non-grata, lost by 7 to LEGO and were eliminated.

NL>Trigger (52-9) put in an uncharacteristically sloppy performance in terr, but it proved to be enough against a shaky Fierce line replete with warbirds, with Markmrw (2.9 RPD) and dsb (2.9 RPD) leading the way ahead of Henry Saari (140-42), turban (121-76), TJ Hazuki (111-93, 3 Teks!), Jatt (96-54), and mr. homo (95-63).

For Fierce, sphinx put in a nice performance, notching a 130-68, ahead of LAST STANDING (120-59), Apricot (103-77), Sprained (100-72), kado, and Apok, with sharking from DOWNFALL (2.8 RPD, 2 Teks) and Oder (2.8 RPD), and an extremely aggressive Everett (60-10, 5 Teks!!), who's been solid for them all season.

HOT: markmrw and DSB
NOT: kado (26-34), losing under to Jatt, who streams 5-6 bullets at a time 1-notch up into the wall all game. There are times where it's appropriate to get caught in someone's stream, but it usually involves being a German porn star, in something they refer to as Die Goldene Dusche.

HONORING THE FALLEN
Sphinx (Fierce)

Sphinx showed to every week, finishing 5th in the league in kills, and leading his squad with a 610-322 record, and was their most consistent spider (alongside Apricot), on top of playing well in their matches against Burn and LEGO in the playoffs

DOWNFALL (Fierce)

When it comes to sharks, Downfall led the entire lead in Teks with 9, nearly averaging a 3.0 RPD and playing in all 9 of Fierce's games, with strong agressive showing in every one of them. Not only that, but he also led the entire league in kills, with 102. Excellent season! This was a tough call picking only one special, as Everett was great all season as well, but DOWNFALL led too many offensive categories to ignore.

WB OF THE WEEK: Deez Nuts
Deez Nuts bounced back from a sub-par week last week, turning his 1-10 frown upside down, notching a 10-1 against Potenza Round 1, then closing them out with an 11-5 Round 2, clinching a TWLD Finals berth for Fierce.


JAVs OF THE WEEK: Tom Juan and Revered
Tom Juan led Juans to a tough, three round victory over Cobra, going 12-5, 14-10, and 11-8 to clinch the victory for this squad.
Revered led Fierce past Potenza with clutch 13-8, 16-7 performances in Round 1 and 3 to get his team the W.

Honorable Mention: Playing Robin to Tom Juan and Revered's Batman, Healt (8-4, 13-10, 13-8) and EvilDeed (15-10, 12-7) also deserve recognition. Healt could've been Jav of the Week, but he stole all my Montreal Canadiens players during our Fantasy Hockey draft.


BASERs OF THE WEEK: Kess and Everett
Kess led all spiders in the toughest match of the Week, as he and Hulk took on Dudgeon's legendary under, who had gotten the better of them in Week 3. Not only did he win his matchup, he outkilled the overspids on both teams, tallying an epic 137-76, and clinching the W.
Everett, meanwhile, went out with a bang, notching an insane 60-10 against a formidable foe in NL>Trigger, amassing 5 teks to NL's 1 -- wowza! He put on a great performance and gave Fierce a chance to win, but multiple starters not showing sunk their cause, despite his best effort.

Jones (Vikings)

Jones ended his TWLD season leading the entire league in Kills Per Game, with a 12.33 average over 9 games, as well as the record for most kills in a round, with 20, while posting the second most kills up to this point, with an amazing 111-77 record. All this while on one of the worst warbirding squads in the league. Kudos!

Racketeer (Paladen)

Racketeer went out with a bang, burning LEGO for 16 in a tough 50-48 Round 3 loss, putting up an impressive 87-71, 30 kills ahead of anyone else on Paladen, and one of only two players on his squad to go positive this season, with a solid +16. His 87 kills were 15th best in the league despite the handicap of playing on a bad team, and he proved he very much belongs in TWLD. Nice work!

Turban had a monster season for LEGO, leading the league in kills with a ridiculous 125-89 record, as well as kills per game (12.5), and +/-, going +36, on top of notching the only 20 kill game this season (the next highest is 17), doing everything humanly possible to keep LEGO's TWLJ season alive. No one on LEGO had over 48 kills this season. Truly a titanic effort. Well done, sir.

euforia had a great season on You2be, finishing 4th in the league in kills, with a 98-99 record, averaging 10 kills per game, and the second-highest score in a TWLJ game this season, with 17. He had almost double the amount of kills as the next player on You2be, leading the team all season in javelin, and put in solid scores in their must-win playoff games. Nice work!

Trasher (Cobra)

AFRI was easily the standout baser on Paladen this season, leading his team in kills in every game in spider, and amassing an impressive 101 KP30M this season. Managing to average over 100 kills a game on such a bad team is an impressive feat, especially given how tough most of their matches were. Good job!

Steep was Vikings best spider this season, finishing 16th out of over 100 in kills, with a 468-273 record and 104 kills per game, including a team-high 125-86 against Cobra in the second round of the playoffs. He was a veteran presence on Vikings all season, and was a big part of their success. Kudos!

warportal anchored the Vikings line in the toughest ship to play and under the most scrutiny, showing to 100% of matches and keeping many of them competitive despite being out-gunned. He posted a 37-7 in their upset against Fierce, leading them to a 15-12 victory despite his spiders being outkilled by 50 (often the mark of a great terring performance.) He wasn't flashy and he wasn't perfect, but without him Vikings success wouldn't have been possible. Vikings clearly agreed, as more than one lobbied me for him to get this award. Nice work!

Sphinx (Fierce)

Sphinx showed to every week, finishing 5th in the league in kills, and leading his squad with a 610-322 record, and was their most consistent spider (alongside Apricot), on top of playing well in their matches against Burn and LEGO in the playoffs. Kudos!

DOWNFALL (Fierce)

When it comes to sharks, Downfall led the entire lead in Teks with 9, nearly averaging a 3.0 RPD and playing in all 9 of Fierce's games, with strong agressive showing in every one of them. Not only that, but he also led the entire league in kills, with 102. Excellent season! This was a tough call picking only one special, as Everett was great all season as well, but DOWNFALL led too many offensive categories to ignore.
