  • Playoffs

I just want to reiterate the playoff format for all those who may have forgotten from the very beginning of the season. These apply for all three sub-leagues in TWL.

The rankings for each conference will be determined by the following order:

    1) Win/loss record
    2) +/-
    3) Head to head (if two teams are tied completely from 1 and 2, whoever won when they played eachother is ranked higher).

This puts a greater emphasis on doing well during the entire season instead of just one lucky game. As well this format was announced at the beginning of the season quite clearly.

The top 4 teams from each conference will advance to the playoffs:

    Round 1: Quarter Finals
    ------------
    West Conference
    1) Rank 1 vs Rank 4
    2) Rank 2 vs Rank 3

    East Conference
    3) Rank 1 vs Rank 4
    4) Rank 2 vs Rank 3

    Round 2: Semi-Finals
    ------------
    5) Winner of game 1 vs winner of game 2
    6) Winner of game 3 vs winner of game 4

    Round 3: Finals
    -----------
    7) Winner of game 5 vs winner of game 6

Each game will be best of 3 rounds, 30 minutes per round.

The rounds will be played concurrently until the game is over.

Each playoff round will have a 1 hour 30 minute timeslot. There will be six timeslots total over Saturday and Sunday:

    2:00pm EST
    3:30pm EST
    5:00pm EST

For playoff scheduling please note that all normal scheduling rules apply. The 60-hour rule will be strictly enforced. Any squad that replies with their first time proposed to their opponent's proposition after 60 hours will have their reply disregarded even if it is recorded on the website.

Also please note for playoffs because there are fewer games, rule 7.05 and 7.08 will change (see website www.twleagues.org for original rule).

If a time is not agreed on and the two squads enter in different days (one enters Sunday the other Saturday), TWL will assign either satuday or sunday for the game, and then choose open slots starting from the 2pm slot and working onward for scheduling (for playoffs as there are less games, if there are 3 games in the slot the next slot is considered).

The day of the game will be picked using a game of rock paper scissors from a squad representative that can be found ASAP from each squad. This is to ensure that squads cannot force Saturday games by not agreeing (as rule 7.08 is there for scheduling purposes when there are 24 games, not 12 or less games).

There will be no break from the end of the season to the start of the playoffs. In fact short of a catastrophic event TWL will have no more delays for the rest of the season.

Oh and yes, any squad caught cheating in any round (of the best of 3) of a playoff game, will lose the ENTIRE game.

I hope that clears things up.

I realize that you won't change it this season. But for next season, you should consider playing:

    # Western vs Eastern
    1 Rank 1 vs Rank 4
    2 Rank 2 vs Rank 3
    3 Rank 3 vs Rank 2
    4 Rank 4 vs Rank 1

Semi 1 - Winner game 1 vs winner game 3
Semi 2 - Winner game 2 vs winner game 4

that seems like ur trying to limit the playoff teams jon , and i think it should be the same bc ur always gonna have the powerhouse's in each league (ex-diso in base) who will win all ther games, and such then u got pallies who are a powerhouse in base and wr now mambo and spastic u know rite tehre is 4 teams...ur limiting the factor of them "wildcard" teams who mite just upset one of them in the playoffs

Cig, his system is the same except that it lets people play against more different teams.

i think you're proposing cross conference playoffs? while it does make up for any unbalanced conferences that may exist, it throws away the notion of conferences from the regular season.

i'd rather see the playoffs stay as they are, i just don't like the cross conference system, if you are going to do something like that, why have 2 conferences, why not just throw every team into one group and do a 1-8 seeding

because cross-conference playoffs eliminates the problem of one conference being a whole lot stronger than the other, it ensures that the best 2 meet in playoffs.

How my summer league ultimate frisbee playoffs works is there are two 12 team divisions. You play the 11 other teams in your division once each, and then play 4 cross over games to determine seeding in the playoffs. Before the 4 cross over games the positions in both divisions are divided into pools X 1-4, Y 5-8, and Z 9-12. The 8 X pool teams will get the 1-8 spots, the Y pool 9-16, and the Z pool 17-24 based on their finishes within the pool. For example the 1-4 teams in each division play each other to determine the 1-8 seeds in the playoffs. The 5-8 teams play each other to determine the 9-16 seeds, and the 9-12 teams play each other to determine the 17-24 seeds. Following this, the top 8 teams are automatically in the playoffs, the other 16 teams play for the last 8 spots. Then the playoffs start the following week with seed 1 playing seed 16, 2v15 and so on all the way down. Personally I like the system, it's fair.

Or we could just keep the current system and just do cross conference playoffs the easy way like Jonas said, which I think is what most of us were expecting to happen this season.

I don't get your point. How would it limit the playoffs? Like Verthanthi wrote: [B]Cig, his system is the same except that it lets people play against more different teams.

But these aren't conferences, these are teams divided into two groups in a seemingly random manner. But I can see where you're coming from with your argument, I simply don't agree, and think it would be more fun to play different teams. It also means two teams from the same conference/group may meet in the finals.

Read what you wrote, think about it, then post again. That would obviously result in far too many games.

              ---

Personally I'd prefer a two division system, with relegations and promotions. Especially for TWLD and TWLJ, as it opens up for even more squads to play. This would probably not work for TWLB since, unfortunately, there aren't enough competitive squads out there.

jonas, the conferences were put together by a panel of representatives from select squads, not randomly.

and the thing about the cross conference games is, 1 squad doesn't play the same squads the rest of their conference does, this could lead to a difference between say a 2nd and a 3rd ranked squad.

and i agree, cross conference does ensure that the best two squads make the finals. however, in either system the best squad will win. i don't think i'd like to see 2 squads play in week ten, and then again in the finals. . .
