Think of it this way, all the 5 good squads KNOW that they had to show up everyweek. Maybe they all do, every week they play each other, it's close as hell. When they play the shitty teams in their conference it's a fucking blowout. Still, ONE team can't go. They played just a tinnny bit worse than the rest. Meanwhile, in the other conference everybody fucking blows. No one is showing up 8 to a game. Nobody deserves to be in the league, nevermind the playoffs... yet 4 of them get to go. See why I think there's a problem? Yeah, maybe wr doesn't deserve to be there. Bleen's right, we aren't playing anywhere near the level of a TWL squad. But hey, just because it isn't a problem RIGHT NOW doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist.
Epi: There clearly were problems. Outside TWLB, I know people were complaining about the LD ladders, too. Yes, everything comes with it's own flaws, but sometimes it's less. Maybe we should draw up a list of pros and cons? I think there needs to be a change, even if it isn't as drastic as Escalate's suggestion.
and seriously, how does everybody just KNOW that one conference is stronger. i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that a 5th seeded squad in 1 conference probably wouldn't do a whole lot in the playoffs. the squad had their chance, they knew exactly what they had to do to make the playoffs, and failed.
this league isn't designed to be a cake walk through the regular season, otherwise we could just say, screw the season, let's just put the top 8 squads (in our opinion) in the playoffs, and see who wins. it's designed to be a competative league in which squads fight for rankings. personally, i'd rather see a good fight in one conference than 4 squads who you know, from the start, are going to make the playoffs.
people all say the ld conference with rampage, elusive, pallies, value was the strong one. but seriously, all 4 knew they were in the playoffs before the season started. who's going to take their spot, dragonguard? the west had melee, diso, egyptian, light, sk8, shriek; six squads who all came to fight day in day out. i'm not complaining "oh, why don't we get brit squad in our conference and you guys take shriek", i'd rather be in a more competative conference, if you know you can bring it, why go for easier opponents. if you can't, that's not because you were put in the hard conference, it's because your squad didn't play good enough.
i didn't follow last season very closely, but didn't a-s make the finals or something? and who would have predicted mambo has this success out of twd, i don't recall any huge "mambo bandwagon". half the fun of the season is watching things like this pan out. and you are trying to take it away? why?Philos> I both hate you and like you more than anyone in this game randedl
Philos> there is something about you
Philos> You're like the wife i'd love to fuck, but beat every night after work
PhaTz> we should all wear t-shirts that says "I WAS THERE WHEN RANDEDL LOST TWLD" and on the back, "TWICE"

Far or not in the playoffs, this system technically will see the best squad in each league win. And isn't that what it's all about in the end? No one remembers who was in the quarter-finals or the semis.
The season was set up for maximal fun for the most amount of people in terms of being able to experience leagues and to be able to play different squads all the time. The winners of each subleague should still be the winners under any situation. If you're the best, you're the best.

well epi i think league also has one other function besides being entertaining and determining who the best squad is...its a way that you can competetively determine not just who is the best, but who is better than who among all the teams. that is why the fact that the playing field isnt always level in the current system is frustrating for squads that get screwed out of playoff spots etc...even if in reality they had very little chance to win the entire league. There exists a fine line between hard partying and destitution.

Was going through my old private messages and realized Escalate made me read this thread over a year ago. Reading over it again, and now that I'm no longer the man in charge (therefore do not have to deal with the BS week in and week out, and view all new ideas with extreme suspicion), it does sound like a cool idea. But still I wonder... is it too complicated for TWL?
I'm still convinced that the general public who participate in TWL will not understand this system, when the TWL staff gets endless silly questions about the current much simpler system week in and week out.
Also with squads dropping out all the time (as is evident by every TWL so far), and with conferences never really being ever balanced will this make TWL better?
Finally in the past season we have seen the top contenders at the very beginning go far, but we have also seen many new squads and even some surprize squads do well. Will this system allow new squads to have an even better chance?
From what I hear PUSHER is playing WoW and no one is really looking at TWL for the next while, so this is a good time for the community to discuss any changes before the rest period for the TWL staff is over and work begins anew for next season.

I didn't have time to read it all, someone might've said it already, or I'm just incredibly mistaken....but didn't you say that you take the best 15 of the TWD ladder? If that is the case, wouldn't atleast some of the squads (let's take Diso in this case) lose some games on purpose, so that they are for example #8 in every league instead of #3. Wouldn't this mean that they would have an easier league? I took Diso in this example since I believe we could beat about everyone in every league. Hope you understood what I meant.
(Playing not to become #1, but to become #8 or something along that to get an easier group?)Originally Posted by HeavenSent

Seems like a great idea, but the squads skill level shouldn't be decided by TWD ladder because this TWD ladder does not represent the skill of a squad.Only the loyal count.

I understand what da1 is saying and it makes some sence, but not total sence. In the end u will want to be in the top tier anyway, mite as well start out there. Even after the 1st group of games u could get back into the top tier eventualy. The problem i see is using the TWD ladder at all. I mean you'll have squads like last TWBD where sk8 finished like 4th or something. Clearly they werent a top tier team, or even a level b Team at the begining of the year. The TWD isnt so bad to decide certain squads, but it isnt good to seed squads bc u dont always ahve ur best pilots on and so on.
Another problem i see with this is how long it will last. I mean 5 teams in each tier, u play each one once. Thats 4 games then a mix up of tiers and shit like that. I mean thats 12 weeek season (longer then current one) and thats without the playoffs. The current season is long enough, i mean its hard to keep some of the squads alive this long, even soemo f the top contenders lose interest. You would never be able to keep the same 15 squads over the course of the season.
I dont think our current system is that flawed at all. I mean you can throw out conferences, make everybody play each other. That'll be hella long season tho. Or u could keep conferences and just hop they are done evenly. Maybe have all the squadcaptains (1-2 of them) make there list from top to worst in each league. Then take the averages and make conferences from that. I personaly dont care if we use them or not, i think the best squads make playoffs anyway. I think our bigger issues are, getting stable bots. Get those so things run smoother. Then you got the "do we wanna change twlb map thing" Again i dont care what we do as long as we know ahead of time what to do.
We dont need a whole overhaul of the system, we just need to tweek some of th elittle things. map change, conferences/none, 4 spider limit, little things like that. The compatition gets better each season and its no need to do something stupid.
Edit: another issue i think that should be hit this offseason is the scheduling of games. There was alot of issues last season on this. I personaly dont care on this again, but alot seem to. What i think should be done is schedule every game for the teams, if they want to change the time during the week then they talk on ther own time, and contact an op to get it changed to an agreed time. It seems like there are some who can negotiate, and some who cant. This method sets everything in stone so u cant say ops are playing favorites, and it also gives captains the ability to takl/negotiate what times they want.Last edited by Cig Smoke; 09-07-2004, 06:01 AM._o_2NASRALLAH
