  • Does TW want/need a New Server?

Every once in a while I'll be posting a question for the TW community 2 c wut efery1 think of an idea that I haf seen be successfil in anothir zone.

    What i recommend 4 TW:
    1. Gratitid n patience 4 the minimil gr8 coding and architectir staff we haf
    2. Pirhips approach better lag 4 efery1 with the undirstinding that it cud take a year or two, esp since there r other parties 2 communicate with
    3. Currintly lots of ppl play TW compititifly from diff time zones and r abil 2 stay in (minis sum lag problims here n there, sumtimes in key momints). To make changes 2 a serfir that alrdy works, imo, it helps 2 c if its wut community rly wants

Yes - this server has been clearly worse than the previous one. Things that moving should help with:
    a) As evidenced by restarting every week, which is probably not necessary, but we don't trust it anymore.
    b) There's a bad hop to the server, if you're unlucky and your data goes via it then your game is totally fucked. So it's a new hosting company we need, not just a new server. The problem is we don't know what degree of relocation would be required to avoid that hop.
    c) There's a 0.1-0.2% packetloss baseline on this server, which didn't exist before.

The last time we moved it took a couple of weeks ish, but it's a reasonably well understood process now. But still, expect a couple of weeks downtime during the move.

    Longer term:
    d) There are better options if we hosted on Linux instead of Windows. But we would need to move from subgame to asss, and rewrite a load of bot code. But it would open up opportunities to do cooler stuff, and probably perform better too. And probably be cheaper.
    e) And there's still the issue of using Priitk's biller, it would be better if we weren't dependent on him for anything. There is a new biller ready to go, but the transition would require careful planning so we don't lose names.

      d) As far as im aware, ASSS is far superior to what we have now in nearly every single metric. I've heard talk of transferring to that for a decade though.

      e) Names are the main thing holding this back? There are like 200 or so active players left in this game, and that's being generous. Maybe 300 max if you count those who log in once every 4 years. I get that people tie names to their identity, but I think just using the twd registration list is good enough for 95% of players. Aliases don't mean anything and shouldn't be catered to, and those who haven't logged in or have been registered in twd for however long it saves names for (if not indefinitely?) might have to make some appeal post in forums or something if someone steals their name. I see pretty much no chance of that really being an issue though. Dock> isn't going to suddenly log in and want his name back.

I don't think a new server will help fix everyone's problem, it'll alleviate some headache at most. I think there's other ways we can improve and make this game enjoyable if changing the server is not the correct thing to do or a top priority. I got 400 Mbps high-speed internet after I bought my new PC which I think is the highest plan you can get in my area and my average ping is 90. Before when I was on laptop I had 100 Mbps and my avg was anywhere between 90 and 140 on WiFi. My backyard is wooded, practically connected to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which may factor in at times to the issues I have with lag...if that's an actual excuse to use.

I watched Dare's video he posted of the Semi's with RaCka and Siaxis and it looked really fluid and crisp from his perspective which made little sense to me because when I play against Dare he's lagging just as bad as someone like Tripin. Even watched Morph eat seven shots while on nine in the Quarter-Finals, but watching Mythril's stream there were only two eats. Just continue on with prized events and finding other ways to make the game enjoyable that'll put the issues with lag behind us.

The most feasible option is keeping the same host but moving locations. The closest location to the current server would probably increase latency a slight bit for Euros. It's likely but not guaranteed that this would avoid the bad hop. Of course, it could also simply put us in the same situation again with a different bad hop.

If someone with network experience has the time to identify the hop definitively, we might be able to map out a path that would avoid it.

Note that this would require a series of steps, including a whitelist through PriitK, some reconfiguration, and coordination with Chaos, which is hosted on the same server.

Anyone who regularly experiences the issues may have luck playing at using a variety of VPN servers, as has been mentioned elsewhere.

If you're also willing to throw money at the problem, there are some services that will compare routes to a server and avoid those that have issues that would affect gameplay. Sometimes incorrectly referred to as "Gaming VPNs," these connection boosters reduce latency and probably can also resolve packetloss issues.

https://mudfish.net - Pay by usage. SS uses only a very small amount of data so this service is very close to free for SS play. Apparently $3 gets you 24GB. That would last you the rest of your life, essentially.

This may be anecdotal, but when i was in Turkey, none of these helped me even slightly. The only thing that actually worked for me at the time was using mobile hotspot. I know that mobile hotspot has worked for a few others players in the past too that were dealing with lagouts. That's not much of a solution though.
