  • UPDATE: What's next?

OK, I have some updates I'd like to share without getting too specific just yet...

To start, TWL will not be the next immediate league. I don't have an exact timeframe on it, but we're targeting sometime late summer or early fall to begin qualifications, depending on some new Bot-related features.

I would like to share we've started TWL-related discussions w/ BIET for...
    • split dueling/basing rosters
    • TWLBot-roster management for captains (no more spreadsheets, fingers crossed), and my personal favorite...
    • objective-based squad qualifications through TWD matches using TWL Rosters. For example, separate Matchbot commands for TWL squads to !chtwl and !chtwl <squad> in TWD arenas.
For the last one, scoring would be tracked separately from anything TWD-related and there would not be a web-interface, which is OK. The rest of the TWL details can continued to be ironed out (roster limits, # of squads, etc.) and I encourage everyone to continue discussing these details.

    NOW FOR WHAT'S NEXT....

Nothing officially has been decided yet, but based on other's ideas, here's what I'm hearing / thinking...
    • groan has expressed interest in running a single day, or (short) multi-day / weekend for EG ?go baseduel tournament. 4v4, roster caps and some limits placed on native-EG players and I believe he said cash prize for the winners.
    • Dueling / Basing cups (Draft style, no star caps)
    • Player-ran beer leagues ran through the ?go base, wbduel, javduel arenas (I have only seen this mentioned by others, but I think it'd be fun to do a 4v4 wb / jav beer league with matches on weeknights) - build your own teams; no drafts needed; super-low maintenance to run
    • TSL - I know I've seen groans about re-running TSL, but I actually had fun and would like to see Rab 's algorithm changes I remember seeing him post about before last season
    • TWDT - I am not high on this, and strongly believe we use any of the above as buffers. If preferred, we can run another TWDT before the next TWL, but I would personally not like to see this be the next immediate league.
Now, perhaps most importantly, we are looking for volunteers to run any of the above ideas. If you any of you are open to volunteering, I can promise you will be amply supported by staff to bounce ideas of what is or isn't possible automation or league rules-wise, training (if needed) for league operator commands, and ensuring matches & the season run smoothly.

Volunteer ops can be single person, or a small committee and our expectations would be for you to make the decisions and set rules for the league. If signups are needed, we can help setup a bot for players to signup themselves (like TWDT and TSL). Post here or reach out to myself or Markmrw in game if you're interested.

Lastly, can I get a fkin HYPE in the chat for everyone's ideas and whatever comes next?

    Let's continue the discussion here.

Not to rain on your parade about qualifications but I think the idea is stupid and outdated for twl

last couple of twl’s haven’t done this and worked out fine for the most part

qualification system is grasping at the past and a waste of energy/effort

I disagree, objective qualifications make it easier to pre-emptively put a cap on the # of squads (keeping the season shorter, too), keeps it extremely fair for everyone, puts less-headaches on TWL Ops to determine which squads do / don't play without being scorned and less deliberation, and perhaps most importantly... boosts TWD activity for a decent period of time.

Cool if you disagree with that, but providing a suggested alternative would be a lot cooler

Edit: The way vys and I handled qualifications last year was a massive headache (minimum TWD matches played with TWL rostered players, and manually verified by me). I'm unaware / don't remember how qualifications were handled in prior seasons to last year, maybe it was easier?

I vote we do a continuum Olympics. Have competitions in regular duels and events from every zone. We will need to figure the best way to do teams. Since we probably don't have enough to go by our individual countries.

I think we got some really good feedback from the initial conversation in the 'TWDT vs TWL' thread. For me I would really like a dueling cup league or TSL with many significant improvements. My thought process is we save TWL for later in the year (like we normally do) and have a league where it can still be competitive and keep activity up heading into the summer months.

If we decided to do another TSL based league again we would need many significant changes in order to accomplish what the original goal of what TSL was supposed to be.

I'm open to whatever league is next and would prefer TWL to happen in Fall / Winter.

I'll have fun with whatever dueling league is run. People seemed to dislike TSL but I'd like to try it, since I wasn't around whenever it ran last time. It can't be any worse than most TWD games.

Just run a cup league for dueling/basing and have an uncapped star draft. Seems to be the most reasonable option. It's similar to TWDT but removes the need for creating lines based on a star cap, and will promote a more competitive environment for each team. This can even be run twice a week and once on Sundays for a larger point reward. Just like the previous basing cup.

Also, as far as the baseduel league goes, personally I'm a huge fan of this as it can promote older players who played EG before it died to return to the game once the word gets out. More players, another league for people to dip their toes into, it's a win-win really.

                    Excited to see what happens!

I would love to play in a baseduel league. Maybe run that at the same time as a TSL? I think a lot of basers will enjoy baseduel if they try it.

My vote would be Warbird Cup, Jav Cup, and Basing Cup, with the format being either ‘TWL with a star cap’ or ‘Small cores of players team up then draft.’

You can always return to uncapped draft for Cups in future seasons.

I would like to be proven wrong but it seems to me that currently the zone isn't ready for twl/twdt/cups/etc. Perhaps the time is right for 1v1/2v2 dueling stuff.

Basically I am leaning towards anything but playing with the same group of people for 5-8 weeks. But I don't matter, so do whatever is best for the majority.
