(Chicago) -- The unexpected visits of a man dressed as Ronald McDonald to a couple of McDonald's restaurants in north central Illinois had authorities wondering if the guise was intended to help set up robberies at the Golden Arches, officials said Wednesday.
A man donning full Ronald McDonald regalia entered a McDonald's at 285 N. Front St. in Braidwood at about 7:24 p.m. Tuesday and began mingling with customers and employees, eventually making his way behind the counter, according to Braidwood police Sgt. Don Kaminski.
The manager, who had not been told of a promotion at the store, became suspicious and watched the clown closely as he made his way through the restaurant, bringing the customers their food and chatting with the children, Kaminski said.
The Ronald was talking to drive-through customers through the speaker system when the manager noticed him paying too much attention to the cash register, Kaminski said. The manager locked the register and asked the Ronald to return to the customer section, which he did.
After the Ronald left the restaurant with the two people he had arrived with, the manager notified neighboring McDonald's to watch out for an unplanned visit from the red-haired clown, Kaminsky said. About a half hour later, at 7:51 p.m., the same trio entered a McDonald's restaurant at 2 S. Broadway St. in Coal City.
The manager of that restaurant allowed the man to mingle with customers, but did not permit him behind the counter, Kaminski said. The trio left the restaurant shortly thereafter in a white van.
Braidwood police ran a check of the van's license plate and found it was registered to an address in Chicago, Kaminski said. The Oak Brook-based McDonald's Corporation told police the van was not one of its registered fleet vehicles, he said.
While no robbery attempt occurred at either store, police were wondering if the Ronald McDonald getup was a set-up for a robbery, Kaminski said.
The sergeant notified 15 police districts in the surrounding area to watch out for incidents involving the food chain's mascot, but no more had been reported since Tuesday night, he said.
Police Wednesday were working with the McDonald's Corporation to make sure it wasn't simply a miscommunication about promotion events that raised suspicions about the Ronald, Kaminski said. Braidwood police had also asked Chicago police to check out the address where the van was registered.
Kaminski praised the manager of the Braidwood McDonald's for being vigilant and promptly notifying police of the potential imposter.
Still, Kaminski said, "You've got to like a creative robber."
