First, to address Nethila's comment about different types of Asians, a lot of people now prefer to differentiate between Asians by dividing the continent geographically and calling people South Asians, Southeast Asians, Central Asians, etc. There is so much diversity in Asia that the term "Asian" is more of a geographic label than one that applies to the people. The "Asian" we assume to refer to Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc... would be East Asian by this system.
I agree with you, Bioture, and I think a lot of it has to do with, yes, them again, the media.
But there are other levels to these stereotypes. Take a look at movies and music and other pop culture. How many English performing Asian rock stars are there? The only ones I can really picture are bit players of groups where someone else is the focal point. There's James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins, and the DJ Joseph Hahn on Linkin Park, but are they the ones you think of when you picture their band? And what about movies. Name one Chinese actor that hasn't ever had to play a Triad member, a kung-fu martial artist, or a scientist. There are some, but it's hard not to picture a Jackie Chan or a Chow Yun Fat or a Bruce Lee. There are always exceptions, but they don't stand out and hold as much prominence.
There's also the issue of the sexualization of the Asian male. Like Mattey pointed out, there's a stereotype about penis length, but that's not as far as it goes. In Western cinema, Asian stars very rarely get the girl. Does Chow Yun Fat hook up with Mira Sorvino in Replacement Killers? Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt in The Tuxedo (yes, I saw it, and no, it wasn't very good at all)? In Romeo Must Die, a film with an implied Romeo and Juliet forbidden love theme, is there any romance between Jet Li and Aaliyah? The answer is inevitably "no".

Most stereotypes are pure and utter BS. There's one german one tho(which i am german) that i've found to almost always be true . The whole Germans are stubborn as hell....thats almost always true...well maybe just for germans from russia >.>

The asian stereotypes, like most stereotypes, are well-deserved. I don't mean that you can say every asian drives a honda with a giant wing on the back, just like you can't say that every black guy runs fast. But there's an awful lot of asian kids with this attitude that they have to be hot shit. They think if they act tough, and they have the fastest honda, and their hair is the spikiest, that chicks will like them better or something. Before you get all PC on me and start saying "shut up, cracker, you don't know what it's like being asian, if you don't have NOS, you don't have shit", go through the TW gallery and look for the asian kids... they'll be the ones with the sunglasses looking hardass or flexing with their shirts off.http://www.trenchwars.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15100 - Gallileo's racist thread

Since I'm the only one that I know of to ever receive a light warning, and I'm still here, I can say that i'm pretty sure it's more than one.

And to Troll King's post - yes, the media does have a part in it. But more importantly, so does the way we are brought up. I think that spoiled rich asian kids are more into the whole neoasian thing because they can use their parents' money to put 20 grand worth of accessories into a 16 grand car. And asian exchange students DO make the best engineers because of the focus on mathmatics back in their countries. Back to using me as an example, I grew up poor in west philadephia. The family is better off now, but I still consider myself quite "ghetto" in the way I do things. My parents are very orthodox chinese people - so even after we moved to the states when I was around 6ish, they continued to teach me the language, the culture, and how its best NOT to flaunt the material possessions that you have.
And yes, I do think I'm "hot shit." But I never really put an emphasis on it - I don't feel that in order to be "hot shit" I have to have a certain wardrobe, do my hair a certain way, drive a certain kind of car, etc etc.
Edit: In a way, I'm like the dude in the kung fu movies that goes about his own business until he absolutely has to beat on someone.
btw wtf is "NOS"Last edited by Bioture; 05-05-2004, 03:21 PM.TelCat> i am a slut not a hoe

I'm not good at math at all.. I sometimes wonder if it is because my large bulbous eyes allow far too much light in, and it dazzles me instead of allowing me to concentrate fully on the math problems at hand.
Note: This is also a joke, and I don't want banned, if action must be taken, could I please get one of those BZ warnings? They don't cause cancer do they?"Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX

however, the same thing can be said for latin americans. when an el salvadoran migrates here to california, inevitably people will assume he's just another mexican.
