  • Britain and Europe

First off I'm English not British. Sorry vish and fruitang, but we can get by fine without you.

In Britain we don't really see ourselves as part of Europe as much. Of course we realise we're officially part of the continent but we see being British and being European as two totally different things. I'm wondering how the Americans see the British in relation to Europe and how Euro's see Britain in relation to Europe and America.

I'm another English guy, I think we're closer to America than we are to Europe.

But I think it would be cool to have the Euro, coz all the coins from different places get mixed up

I guess it depends: by "Americans" did you also mean Canadians?

actually, I guess you are right. I would probably also feel a lil more connected to another country who share for example the same language and so on.

I think it's because your nation once owned a large percentage of the entire world it's culturally hard to consider yourselves to be a part of another collective.

                  Interesting question.

Personally I consider Britain to be as much a part of Europe as France and Germany are. The politics, government, customs and behaviour resemble much more of Europe than of America.
Actually, from my perspective England all that America is not: old-fashioned, long history, old traditions, demure. Sure I'm stacking up a bunch of cliches there, but that doesn't mean it's less true.

That's why all attempts of England pairing up with the US (Bush & Blair vs Iraq anyone) seems as appropriate as pairing up a clown with an undertaker.

England's definately Europe in about every possible way. And though the entire country seems to be in a state of denial, I believe it will not take long before it'll swallow its pride and actually participate in building up a strong European economy, rather than trying to sit in the lap and lick the face of the current world leader.

I must say, I have that exact same view, I am English, not British or European. I don't feel particularly close to America either.

I've always considered myself to be British first and English second. I may be English but half of my family is from Scotland and I've spent some time in Wales. We're all very intermingled anyway. What we do share is the common experience of living on these isles just off continental Europe, so I've never seen much point in differentiating except when it comes to taking the piss out of each other.

As for the Europe or America thing, I hope we have a lot more in common with the rest of Europe. Maybe not in language, but in terms of outlook, culture and perspective on life.

The sad thing for Britain is that we have this whole language thing. The British in general are not very good at learning other peoples languages. This is not good considering our nearest neighbours speak anything but English. This also means that we are open-season for any american shit that comes along. The whole american thing has become worse over recent years and it genuinely fucks me off.

Btw Zeus, use "I" not "we", you're not speaking for England, Britain or me.

I was reading the newspaper while I was over in London two days ago (by the way Zeus, I couldn't find ANY good pubs in the Euston area, but our hotel was right next to Euston station, so it was ideal), and it was saying that if the UK goes into the Euros, they'll contribute over HALF of the Euro cash resevoir. There is so much to read over in Europe about the big contraversy between the French trying to get the Brits into Europe, and the Brits not wanting to. It's very interesting stuff that American news doesn't even touch apon.

Us Americans don't care about anyone except ourselves. We only show world news that affects us or even somehow remotley deals with us.
