I know that the world championships in ice-hockey don't get much atetntion from the American players/media, but what about this? Do you actually have the best players playing?

Btw desp, I'm afraid kiprusoff used up all his nice saves in the game against germany.

as the swedish citizen I am I can only agree to the nice comments you have said about our strenght "on the paper". However its obvious we lack good goaltending and it seems like the team is "too offensive" (sigh, that shouldnt even be possible ) cos well they suck in defense
Sweden for choke in semis yeah..but this time it wont be a choke, just poor playing from important positions such as goaltending where we really dont have any great option right now

as long as we beat Finland tonight Im happy. Another 6-5 anyone?

Indeed. I think tellqvist (sp?) let 3 shots in of the first 5 shots on goal (3/5= 60%)

O and yes, don't remind us about that game. Ever.

That Sweden-Finland game was great. The result must be a little bitter-sweet for both sides. Finland clinches first in their pool by goal differential, ahead of Sweden, but from a morale standpoint, it was a little too much like that 6-5 debacle. They may have finished ahead and drew the Germans in the playoffs, but in the backs of some of their minds they're thinking: "we still couldn't finish off those Swedes". With the more important playoff games ahead, they will have to be able to do that.

On the Swedish side, being able to come back gives them a bit of a morale boost, but there are more negatives to the story: a tie was just as bad as a loss as far as the standings were concerned, and both Salo and Tellqvist have shown a tendancy to let in weak goals.

In the North American division, the Canadians finished strong with a 3-1 victory over the Russians on the 32nd anniversary of the historical 4-1 victory over the same Russians in the same city during the '72 Summit Series. "Backup" defence pair Bouwmeester and Hannon filled in with an excellent game, showing the depth in Canada's defensive corps. The fans weren't as raucous as they were in Montreal, plus they had a couple of days off, so it wasn't a surprise that Canada didn't get as good a start as they did in their first two games. Today's pivotal Russia-Slovakia game should be good game as well.

I like Telqvist, he's still pretty young and you could see flashes of his great play, yes some weak goals but which goalie doesn't let some of those through, it's the timing of those that are important.

Away from this tournament i think the leafs have a pretty solid young goalie to look forward to, and with Belfour being out for the first few months of the season, he'll have time to bring the game to the next level.

back to the championship, that mad scarmble with 10 seconds to go was intense, i kind of wanted the Finns' to win but a tie is the same thing, we'll se e how things go in the next rounds.

The USA media doesn't really give it any attention. If you go to www.espn.com it will take a bit of searching to figure out this is even going on, and finding anything in the sports page of the newspapers on it isn't very easy. However, I do think the players take it seriously and they are sending the best rosters possible, with the players actually wanting to participate. Hockey in general isn't very popular in the USA right now, and hockey in the summer just doesn't click with most people here. Everyone is concerned with one thing only, the start of the football season.

Luckily, we don't have to. If the czechs don't finish them off tomorrow, canada will.
