Popularity is in the eye of the beholder, you could be friends with everyone but the people you feel are "popular" and still consider yourself unpopular. Now, the definition of popular (Widely liked or appreciated) is not any different from the way it is used in middle school and upwards. But, in the eyes of most people, you need to be friends with a certain group of people to be popular.

It's total bullshit to just assume that to be smart means you don't have time to have friends. The vast majority of smart kids are naturally smart, they may strive to be more intellignet, but for the majority, learning comes much easier to them, that's why they are consdidered "in the 80th percentile" or above.

People generally make friends with people similar to themselves, so jocks will be friends with jocks, smart kids with smart kids, superficial girls with superficial girls. And by doing this, popularity is formed, the jocks like the superficial girls because they're attractive and vice versa, and the nerds like the nerds because they're smart. If you were to put a nerd and a superficial girl in a room together, they would just stare at eachother. The nerd knows she doesn't know about rocket science, and she knows that he doesn't know about skin care, so what will they discuss?

Nerds are "unpopular" because they choose to be friends with other nerds, if you know a lot about football, you'll probably be friends with people who know a lot about football, because you share a common thread. It's not because you just don't have time to learn all the ins and outs of conformity, because part of being a kid means knowing what the jello mold is, and choosing to be that mold, or not to be. But just because you decide not to dress the same as everyone else, doesn't mean you can't be friends with the same people.

haha its the same way at my school, only they didnt name them by A to E its was simply Cool to extrem losers/nerds. i was placed at what he would call the B table, we called it the Cool but dont care table. i play sports and shit and party a lot but i try to stay away from the Cool ppl as they would put it cause they are simply ass holes, even tho i play ball with more then half of them.

Personally I loved high school. Stastically speaking I was the smartest kid in my school basically, but I never felt like an outcast because of it. No one ever picked on me for being smart. People get in trouble when they are arrogant about their intelligence and like to flaunt their intelligence. I think a lot of people at my school didn't even realize I was smart, because I never made a big deal out of it. Of course that dodges the whole question about are people unpopular because they are intelligent. My theory is don't be a jerk, and you won't be unpopular. Smart people are often times jerks.
