i've been listening to a lot of emo lately.
      particularly
alkaline trio - private eye, trouble breathing, san francisco, stupid kid, goodbye forever
      and i just bought
audio karate - senior year, san jose, halfway decent, speak and the devil appears.

I'll agree with checking out Godspeed you black emperor. Quite good

If you like them also check out Mogwai, Dirty Three, Spiritualized, Boards of Canada, and Boxstep. (Boxstep if a local band from Pittsburgh, you won't be able to find basically anything from them, but I just wanted to give them a mention since I'm friends with the lead singer and they've opened for Godspeed).

If you'd like something a little more electronica and a little less experimental rock I'd check out Zero 7, Lovage, or Air.

For some good Indie Rock type stuff try:

              Dandy Warhols
              Modest Mouse
              Built to Spill
              Wilco
              Belle and Sebastian

If you are really into somber stuff you can always check out Smog.

For more happy upbeat stuff I'd recommend

              Dispatch
              Guster

And if you want some hiphop you can't beat
              Jurassic 5
              Blackalicious

              in my opinion.

                Sasha - best techno
Portishead - best depressing trip hop
Sneaker Pimps - more trip hop
                I'd rather be SubSpacing.

                  U Penn Off the Beat...

Definately not mainstream and definately not heavy metal, and definately not angry.

dimboy is on the money with that one.

Anything by feeder, Just a Day and come back around are 2 of the best, 'A' are along the same sort of lines, try "hundred Reasons" and also "a new found glory" who have done some good cover tacks like, Dont want to miss a thing by aerosmith.
It depends what your looking for though, and what age you are, try "train" if you want some proper music, that ISNT mainstream/rocky/techno etc.

A few more to try: (band - album title - best songs)

Feeder - Echo Park - Just a day, Come Back Around, Buck Rogers.
A - Serious Hi-Fi - Nothing, Pacific Ocean Blue, Starbucks, The Springs.
Gay Dad - Leisure Noise - anything
Hybrid - Wide Angle - anything
                        Wilt - Bastinado - anything
Oasis - All - Little By Little.. anything else
                        Idlewild

                        -aphix
help: (skate) (elim): I fell off my chair, can someone help me up?
