First of all, Hunting rifles are more powered than assault rifles so they are not more dangerous than what is already out there. Anyone could easily get a remmington 700, put a good scope on it along with a good sniper stock and you've got yourself a lethal .5 MOA sniper rifle. A setup like this would trump the Maryland sniper's setup easilly.

Many hunting rifles are modified versions of their military cousins, however what separates an assault arm from a hunting arm is the capability to fire in semi-auto mode, and/or other military type features such as infrared, low-light, etc. None of these are necessary for hunting purposes, but do increase the "dangerousness" of the weapon in the hands of an assailant. So does the ability to own a clip larger than 10 rounds (how many times you gonna plunk that deer bubba?)

Second of all, thugs are too poor to own assault rifles. Assault rifles go for 2 grand and up, the really good ones going for much more than that. A street thug will normaly carry a 50 dollar POS handgun. Note the difference in price.

Columbine. Now picture Columbine with semi-auto assault weapons with larger clips. Better yet, take a look at the high school hostage situation in unregulated Russia. On top of this "2 grand and up" is the new price, and if they start selling assault rifles, a lot of current military surplus, and pre-ban items go back on the sales block. I doubt you'd have to spend more than 10 minutes looking before you could find one for under 2 grand.

Thirdly, assault rifles are almost never used in crimes. This goes along with number 2.

There's a very famous video of men armed with assault weapons and body armor shooting it out outside a bank. (Los Angeles I think) True, the number of instances of crimes in which assault weapons were used is low, but if you watch the video, I don't think you'll find a single reason to give someone an excuse to increase those numbers.

You wont be able to understand why someone would want to own an assault rifle until you've shot one.

I've shot one (Surplus M16) at a range in alaska, along with a DE and various other pistols, single shot rifles and shotguns. Honestly, there's very little else to do in Fairbanks. I understand the thrill of firing such a weapon, but I also recognize that such an item does not serve any purpose other than being a very very dangerous collector's item in the hands of a law abiding citizen, or a very very dangerous tool in the hands of a criminal.

I was reading fight club (novel > movie) and there was something mentioned about how drilling holes in the barrel of a pistol the right way would let the gas vent, lowering the noise and velocity of the bullet (which lowered the noise, no sonic boom) or something.

Yeah, that'd be porting. But it's difficult and you risk fucking up you gun that way. The best way to accomplish a subsonic round is by using a larger bullet. I don't mean a larger caliber shell. I mean the actual bullet part. Bigger Bullet is heavier, and flies slower, but because of the larger mass it will fly almost as far. One of the versions in .308 of that is called the .308 Whisper.

This morning on the news they were talking about the ban, and said that a Flash Hider "enables a person to shoot in the dark without the flash giving them away". I laughed and then was angry about it. These people are the news, they're supposed to check up on facts.

Just in cast any of the rest of you are under this erroneous impression:
A flash hider, all it does, is the muzzle flash that comes out of the end of the barrel, it directs the flash to the sides, instead of coming out in a giant bloom. Why? So the person firing the weapon isn't blinded by the flash and is able to see to take a second shot, if necessary.
