za gophar, do you have to know how to swim good to be a lifegaurd?

whats the certification like?

the only job i had was at this italian restaurant, i kinda hated it at first but then it was cool. there was only like 3 customers an hour except on sundays lunch time because theres a church nearby and people went there. also sometimes around 9 theres a few people cause its near the movie theater. usually i just threw ice cubes at the abandoned building next door through the drivethrough window with the manager and talked about life. memories

well i wouldnt say u have to be a good swimmer but u do have to know how to swim. i played water polo throughout highschool so i was set, but i know a few gaurds who arent too good at swimming. i think they make you swim 500 yards and tread water with a brick in your hands for a minute. you will also have to make various types of rescues which involve rolling people over in the water or bringing them up from the bottom of the pool. you get a tube for those though. so if you can swim 500 yards, you can probably be a lifegaurd.

the certification kind of sucks. i got mine over with in two weekends... 8 hours a day saturday sunday both weekends. half was in the water training, half was classroom time. its pretty easy but u gotta take it seriously because they will test you on it and you need to pass. i did that two years ago though and it is long forgotten and well worth it. i think you have to re-test every 3 years, but its not too tough.

i might also mention that the pool you work at makes a big difference. my sister works at a different pool and she got paid over a dollar per hour less than i did at my pool. not only that, but she had been at her pool three years and i had been at mine two. my staff is also way better than hers in just about every way you can imagine so yeah. talk to people.
